As I was reading this book, I couldn't decide if I kind of hated it or if I was really into it. I think both ended up being kind of true. But when I finished, I also realized that it was exactly like an adult version of the Christopher Pike books I loved as a kid. There were villains with an overly complicated plan and no coherent motivation. There were twins and someone with a strange illness or allergy. The main characters were isolated in their lives with no connections to anyone outside of the 4 or 5 people in the story. Someone was ridiculously handsome and a regular normal person suddenly developed superhero-level knowledge of guns and explosives and tactical maneuvers. There was a weird romance at a weirdly inappropriate time. It had all of the elements from all of the Christopher Pike books - just with less body shaming and objectification of teenage girls.
Anywhooo - the basic plot is that a single mom gets a phone call that her daughter has been kidnapped and she has to pay a ransom, plus she has to continue THE CHAIN by kidnapping another kid and forcing that kid's parents to pay a ransom and kidnap another kid, and so the chain continues. Once you have added a new person to the chain, your kid gets released. It is an interesting idea and there are some high tension moments, but as the book went on, I just felt like it got more and more silly.

Great ending!!!!! Very pleased with the plot twist. 5 stars ❤️
Remember those annoying chain letters when you were younger? Forward this letter or something awful will happen.
Well, what if the “chain” was kidnapping, ransom, or worse?
When Rachel’s daughter is kidnapped, she’s not only tasked with paying $50,000, but with kidnapping another child herself. And so on, and so on, and so on. Any police involvement and The Chain will know!
What would YOU do?

This was very suspenseful, a little predictable but worth the read! I finished it feeling as if I just watched a good action movie.
This is a page turner, but it’s not a very good one. The premise is interesting and it kept me going for a while, but about halfway through I just wanted this book to end. Implausible, contrived, Meh
dark
tense
I really liked this one— a bit scared that it would freak me out but what a page turner!!!
This started off as a 5 star but ended as a 1 star so I split the difference and gave it a 3. I loved the first half. It was a great idea. A chain phone call. We have kidnapped your child. In order to get him/her back you need to pay money into a bitcoin account and then kidnap another. Once that family follows those same steps, you will get your child back. And so on goes the chain. Once you’re part of the chain, you are theirs. Great premise. But the second half kind of falls apart. The ex brother in law heroin addict who is suddenly able to stay quasi clean to help break the chain, the other chain victim who is an MIT professor who spouts nothing but lengthy complex computer tech information, the incredibly stupid masterminds that supposedly were brilliant (computer tech headhunted by google and the fast tracked FBI agent) and somehow get taken out in 2 pages of the novel at the end. Such a shame because the book had such promise.
(3.5)
Bom enredo, bastante cativante desde o começo. Há sempre algo novo a acontecer, o que faz com que o leitor não perca o interesse. Contudo, o final não corresponde totalmente às expetativas.

Going to be reading more of this author. Writing was amazing. Plot twists were plot twisting! I’m so excited to read more of his work.
