I should've DNFd this book. It had a great premise and even a fairly strong start, but it got lost along the way. Characters were all looking for hope, but they were looking for it in the wrong place. I guess it reminds me a little of my own fantasy where I want to grab all the MAGA people and put them on their own deserted island, because ultimately, I believe that's what they want - a country of just people like them. But as in this book, my fantasy isn't all that thought out, has no long-term funding behind it, and isn't ready for unintended consequences.
Book wasn't all that well written. Characters lacked depth and were mostly made up of whiny people. I would not want to be in their underground society, so I'm not sure why I bothered to finish reading about it. And no, it was not lost on me that Amadou and Trayvon were likely named after Amadou Diallo and Trayvon Martin.

kind of boring. didnt really understand the point. characters were interesting but i was expecting something different.
The New Naturals is a novel comprised of multiple POV's from individuals who are searching for more from life. Rio and Gibraltar, after suffering a crushing emotional blow decide that current society is not capable of delivering a life they want to live. They begin to feel an intense urge to start their own society underground away from the madness of current society. As other individuals learn about their safe haven, more POV's are added, exploring various reasons why they want to get away from their current lives and start fresh. Through them we experience homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and profound loss, all reasons why sometimes people give up on life. But, instead of giving up they begin their journeys to the abandoned restaurant, and the secret society hiding underneath it.
The main focus of this novel is the individuals experiences, rather than the building and maintaining of a secret society. There is some discussion on this topic including finding a benefactor, and what that entails, as well as how to feed a population surviving underground, but it is far from the focus of the novel.
The New Naturals is not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it all the same. There is heartache, struggle, and trauma, but throughout there is a vein of hope, perseverance, and drive to keep going despite the odds against them.

Enjoyed this tragic-comedy following a number of individuals trying to figure out their purpose and best survive/thrive in a world while dealing with varying traumas and experiences.

I really wanted to love The New Naturals, which has such an intriguing premise. A group of people disappointed in society try to build a utopian community and forge a better future. What’s not to love about that?
Unfortunately, the execution fell a little flat for me. The characters spend much of the book journeying towards the utopia, and I was wishing for more of the details of them building it. The ending of the book also felt anticlimactic and I wish it had expanded a little more. I thought this was a great effort, but unfortunately it didn’t hit the mark for me.
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for an early copy of this book.

Everyone speaks in like 2 or 3 word sentences. It's very caveman like.
