so, so glad i finally picked this book up! klune gives ox such a lovely narrative voice, it made for a very endearing exposition (especially in the earlier parts of the book when ox is a child).
i will say that the first half is better than the second! even so, it still ends up a wonderful story of resilience, love, loyalty, and found family.

animal death— cats and dogs (not including werewolves) are safe! but there are explicit descriptions of hunted rabbits and deer, which were unsettling for me to read even though it made sense as these are wolves.
adult/minor relationship— nothing actually happens while the younger character is a minor, but there is a five year age gap between the main couple. feelings develop on the younger's side while he is very young (11 if i remember correctly) and the older struggles with beginning to feel attraction to him while the younger is still 17. other characters laugh at this and are supportive of the relationship, frequently making obscene jokes about it. tread carefully if this might be upsetting for you.

Um so that was not at all what I expected. First of all, the writing style is amazing. It mirrors the thoughts of Ox, and seeing the evolution and change was so moving.
The characters and the development is amazing, but world building is bad. The villain is also very hollow. Of this was coming of age, it would be perfect.

The age difference was bothering me too much
This terrible Teen Wolf/Vampire Diaries fanfiction has grooming of a child character, debatable pedophilia, massive age difference, and horrible power dynamic that makes me want to crawl out of my skin.
