I didn’t know anything about this book going in and it surprised me. I think Black could have explained some of the world building a bit better since I found myself still confused even halfway through the book. That being said, I’m almost always a fan of a nonlinear plot and I think that added to the overall mysterious mood of the book.

The cliffhanger definitely had me wanting more and I’m very excited for the sequel.

It’s a really interesting story, especially lore wise. The plot twist is exceptional. I just found the writing a bit clunky, it didn’t flow nicely for me. I also do have a hard time with moral bankrupt main characters, so if you also hate that I wouldn’t suggest.

Low Fantasy, Romance Subplot, 1/2 🔥

the first half of the book was a bit boring but seeing as you get introduced to a new world with magic and all the characters it's normal. the more I read the more interesting it became and the end was well worth the wait.

the amount of different characters did give me a whiplash because I got confused quite a bit.

charlie was kind of annoying at the beginning too but she changed my mind by fighting for vince. vince was my absolute favourite though.

It’s a bit of a slow burn. Didn’t
love it, didn’t hate it, wasn’t expecting one of the turns it took! I’m much more excited for the inevitable sequel(s) to find out what will happen to Charlie and Vince.

It's honestly fantastic. Just the kind of Holly Black fantastic you hope for when picking up one of her books. World building, intelligent young adult fiction writing genius. No cheap tricks to keep readers hooked. Just very very fantastic writing.

Holly Black continues to be fantastical fiction queen.

<Spoiler> Scary at points but I'm easily scared. Twists in unexpected ways.
