This series is important and so well crafted. I love the primary source quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Hamilton lovers will go bonkers for this one--it was cool to get another perspective on the Battle of Yorktown. ("Cool," of course in the revisionist sense: this history is complicated and so many marginalized voices were lost and are still lost and those in positions of power will never voluntarily abdicate).
I especially appreciated moments like "say her name" - "I wished that I knew their names. I would speak them out loud in quiet moments, in beautiful places, and in so doing, keep a part of them alive. Your true name was one of the few things they could not take away from you, hard though they tried."
I also appreciated Isabel's unrelenting and well-founded skepticism of power: the British gave up African American turncoats and Washington put them back into slavery. Isabel knew and young readers must understand: We are our own liberators.
You could read book 3 without reading the others; enough references are planted to help you along with any gaps you missed in prior novels.

I absolutely adore this series. It seems hard sometimes to find high-quality historical fiction, but when I find a series like this, it completely restores my faith in the genre!

This was fantastic, all of my problems regarding the previous book's style of character interaction vanished. I don't think a book has brought me to tears as many times as this, I had such a hard time choosing a favourite quote as I loved so many lines of this book. There was, as always, a wonderful plot and stellar descriptions. I truly could not put this book down and every word I read made me more excited for the next event. The arc with Ruth and Isabel was perfect and completely believable given everything we know about the sisters, as well as the arc with Curzon
A factual and clear perspective. You have moments of patriotism and moments of anger at the hypocrisy of it all. She captures the mess that is America while highlighting the beauty of the real people in it who loved and built it.
So good. So good. SO GOOD. I waited a long time for this final installment and it was worth it. I considered rereading Forge before starting this, and I decided against it. Turns out I didn't need to, as Anderson included enough detail/back story to refresh my memory.
I look forward to whatever she comes out with next!

A fine ending to a wonderful trilogy. Isabel’s longed-for reunion with her sister doesn’t go as planned, and the complications force her and Curzon’s party towards Yorktown and the final battles of the Revolution. Continues its excellent, nuanced depiction of the conflicts facing Black people during the Revolution and beyond, with an ending that is suitably hopeful.
