I honestly got too distracted by how terrible of a dairy farmer Norm was to focus on the plot of the book.
Normally multi-narrator books are my favourite but in this case I felt that the time spent on characters other than Brandon really dulled what was otherwise an intriguing and unique story. Brandon’s perspective and his connection with nature are so compelling and his character is well crafted. Many of the other characters were not only uninteresting but unsympathetic as well. Overall, this was an interesting book to pick up randomly 15 years after it was written, when its premise is more relevant than ever before.
Dropping into a small border town (Canada and US) for a short time to just see what is happening there at this time, Jim Lynch brought to life Brandon Vanderkool - one of the more interesting characters to come along in a long long time.
I enjoyed reading about the current border issues with Canada as well as the hardships in small areas of having borders and closing them off.
Well done story and an author definitely to put on the "to buy" list.

Good local tale of people living on the border, changes to their lives, the temptation of smuggling. Main character is lovingly drawn - not very social but loves animals/birds - as a chaotic life unfolds around him, he is counting birds, but his exceptional ability to see detail helps him in other ways.
I just found this book today in my news letter for Powell's Books. This is the same author of The Highest Tide. Can't wait to read it!
The characters are interesting enough to keep reading but it never quite tips over into truly good. Interesting characters but story lacks.
The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch is one of my favorite books. Unfortunately I didn't love this one as much, however I loved the setting. It takes place along the border between Blaine and White Rock. I recognized a lot of the landmarks that were mentioned in the book and it was very interesting to think about how much of the story is really happening along the border every day.
I'm so glad I heard this book recommended, because I probably wouldn't have picked it up from the description. A great story, believable characters I could care about, lovely and thoughtful prose. It has everything!
