If you are at all interested in productivity and focusing on the things that matter, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this book! (And even if you aren't, I think this will win over a few of you...)
This was a very interesting read with a lot of good perspectives and advice from what the authors have found helpful. A lot of research went into this and all sources were cited. I also loved that these advice was not a "you have to do this" and a "one size fits all" solution but personal preference and ever evolving. The one thing I would have liked to see more citing of scientific anthropomorphical and psychological studies.
How I read this book: in audio form
Would I recommend this book to you? Yes, if you are looking for something to inspire some thoughts about how you spend your time and about how you might resist digital time sucks.
How I would recommend you read this book: audio form, with a way to take an occasional notes nearby. But not with intent to deeply focus.
Did I end it with the thought that I might want to reread it some day? No.
This is a breezy book on finding ways to improve your personal productivity and time management. It comes to us from two authors basically talking about the ways they have experimented in their own lives to improve their own use of time. They do not purport to be experts - they encourage the reader to experiment with the tools they introduce. The tone is conversational and I give their advice about the same weight I might give that of a self-aware friend who tries to live a deliberate life. In my opinion this is a book to spur thoughts about your own life, not to provide a blueprint.
One criticism I would give is that the exercise section took the authors well beyond their scope of expertise. I'm a huge fan of setting a minimum basic habit that is really easily reached when it comes to self care fundamentals like exercise. For that reason I don't reject the author recommendation of twenty minutes a day out of hand. However, they make the same mistake many people who write about exercise make, which is to say that something will make you healthier without defining what 'healthier' means. You need to define a specific health goal before declaring one form of exercise (in this case, HIIT workouts) to be the best form. Is it to counteract the effects of the modern sedentary lifestyle? (Researchers are repeatedly coming to the conclusion that 20-30 minutes of movement a day is nowhere near what is necessary for that.) Is it to counteract the loss of muscle mass that comes to all as we age? Is it to be able to keep up with the grandkids while playing at the park? To fit into ones high school jeans? 20 minutes is much better than 0 minutes in these cases but anyone expecting to meet a specific health or fitness goal would be better served by learning from people with a lot more expertise than provided here. I would have been much more comfortable if they had recommended daily exercise in some minimum form and pointed people to better resources.
(I have to admit I skipped the food section after the exercise section because I am comfortable in my knowledge about both of those subjects and once I found the exercise section disappointing I didn't think I would find anything of value in the nutrition section.)

Maybe this is bc I was consuming it in audiobook form or bc I already read too many time management books or maybe bc I've already tried all the "extreme" methods described in the book so far (is deleting apps that extreme?) but I just couldn't get into it! I didn't feel like I was getting anything new.
The highlight idea is cool though, but also not new to me. This would probably be better had I not read all those other self help books. I'm sure though, it could be helpful to others.

This was very interesting! This is probably the first true "self-help" book I've ever read, and I think that it was worth it. I'm usually suspicious of books that ascribe personal philosophies blindly to the masses, but "Make Time" was genuinely very fun and thoughtful. The authors encourage you to modify their personal systems in whatever way best fits your life, as well as admitting that they're just human like you!
I appreciated the combination of philosophical and practical advice and found the doodles very charming. If nothing else, the authors sure know how to present themselves, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I definitely recommend this if you need a little pick-me-up and are interested in trying out different ways of organizing your day or trying to introduce new habits.

3.5 ⭐⭐⭐
