Quite a heavy book but the protagonist was an incredible character. It was so detailed and all the descriptions were beautifully done. I loved the complicated characters and the different kinds of relationships people built with one another.

While I realize this book might not be completely accurate for how things are in India, it was nice to read about a different culture. I found it interesting to read about the henna being created and how it is inspired. I did also enjoy Lakshmi being a strong female character, even if there were lots of bad decisions throughout the book. Regardless, it was a nice read that I became very much engaged with. I connected with these characters and wanted what was best for them. I will definitely be looking for the sequel in my book travels.

I hope more books with diverse voices get as popular as this book appears to be. It's a nice change.

Four out of five stars.

Fast-paced and character-driven, I felt compelled to read this novel in a single day! Although some auxiliary characters were unrealistically helpful than they probably would be in the highly codified society created by the caste system, readers will be relieved when they come to the aid of the compassionate, trustworthy, and resilient Lakshmi. Ultimately, an accessible and beautifully woven tale.

3.5 stars. I had trouble getting into this book and was over halfway through when I started to take interest. The ending was fine, but expected.

Apesar de ter gostado de ficar a conhecer melhor esta cultura tão diferente da minha e de como o livro terminou, demorei a entrar no ritmo da estória e a sentir-me cativada.
