This is the second book of a surprisingly entertaining series.
It took me over a year to finish this book, not through any fault of the book's, but simply because I had to keep checking it out of the library in non-kindle e-book form, which made my reading options limited. So it's hard to keep the whole story in my head at once and I'm sure some significant plot points in the beginning were lost on me by the time they came back into play at the end of the book.
One bizarre observation about at least the version I read: I swear there is a major editing error where the author keeps mixing up the ant cities of Myna and Tark. It was rather confusing.
This second installment had all of the action and intriguing character dynamics and world-building as the first book. I was super excited that we got to see a little bit of the butterfly kinden.
Also, I think Totho is the creepiest character by far. Talk about taking the friend-zoning mindset to the extreme. He scares me more than Thalric or Drephos.

Book two done, and I still can't figure out exactly why I like this series so much. The characters are fine, but no single one stands out. The worldbuilding is great, except lack of detailed descriptions still makes it hard to picture exactly what all those unusual creatures and machines look like. Plot is there, but not very much of it. There are twists. But all of them comfortable. You know it kind of makes sense but it's not shocking. I am not afraid that any main characters die (and they do die sometimes), I do not care who wins the war we hear so much about.
By any reasonable standard I should not enjoy this book. And yet, it all comes together like a thousand individually unimportant pieces forming a beautiful mosaic.

Quality continuation. I love knowing that there are still 8 more books for me to go through in this series
