Buddy read with Biba from Books With Biba!
My review:
My review:
- ummm let’s just say that I’ve never had to make a character list before reading A Murder Is Announced
- there were way too many characters to keep track of—I did get some of them down by the end, but there were still times where I was like “who’s that??”
- the idea of a murder being announced was cool, but I just didn’t like how the rest of it played out
- this was definitely NOT Agatha’s best work, so please don’t start with this one… sorry Biba 😅
- okay so bedsides there being too many characters, the whole story behind the murder was convoluted (I think that’s the word we’re using to describe A Murder Is Announced lol)
- I pride myself on guessing a good 90% of Agatha’s much more famous book, Death on the Nile, but I didn’t see any of the plot twists coming except for one
- and then there was a character that seemed to have come out of nowhere. Seriously I don’t remember Agatha mentioning them until the last quarter of the book
- and maybe this is because I live in quite literally a different century but I didn’t see the need for some of the strange dialogue between some characters. There was this whole bit at the end that I was like “huh??? Why is this necessary?”
- I know that this is a Miss Marple book, but I feel like she wasn’t in it all that much. And then she miraculously solved the case after a little bit?
Moral of the story: this was definitely not my favourite Agatha Christie book. It was generally convoluted, confusing, and the twists came out of nowhere. Sadly this is going to be a 3 star read for me… truly I wish it was higher 😞

I’m surprised to find that the best introduction to Miss Marple comes four books into the series. She actually gets to play a role other than the outside observer here, and the reader actually gets to see her genius built up bit by bit instead of established by hearsay.
The mystery is very good, a big twist with enough clues I was able to partly guess—though the glum police PoV dragged the tone and some characters felt underused. Still a pretty solid Christie mystery.

A fun mystery which kept me guessing until almost the end. The social comedy is very entertaining though some of the attitudes of the time grate now. An enjoyable light read.
Everyone loves a good, quaint, English countryside murder mystery. In fact, multiple murders! A strong premise, and since I didn’t figure it out, so it must’ve been a good mystery. Not quite Frasier Crane’s Nightmare Inn, but worth 4 stars.
Eka luettu Christieni ikinä!
