Dark and often ugly. Totally weird. I can't decide if I liked it or not.

Hands down best book I have read in a long time. Incredibly bizarre, perhaps a bit outdated, impeccably written. A wild ride full of strange characters and insane story lines.

It’s very hyped up for an overall disappointing read. 3/4 of the book just to get to the action that takes place in a matter of seconds… wouldn’t read if I could turn back time.

One messed up tale.

one of my top five.

You know that character, Stefon, on SNL who describes all the newest clubs in NYC and they all have these crazy, demented features? Well, I think Stefon is necessary for describing this book.

"Here with the latest on the literary scene is our resident bibliophile, Stefon."
Stephon: "The newest book by Katherine Dunn, Geek Love, is a freak show not to be missed. It's got a megalomaniacal boy with flippers for limbs, conjoined twins with two torsos and one set of legs, a hunchback, albino dwarf, a boy who can move things with his mind, a demented surgeon, a sawed off horse, a fat baby, a girl with a tail, a crazed shooter, and a group of followers taking off their limbs one at a time. If you like demented, this books for you."

If you got through Stefon's review and thought, "yeah, I'm down with that", then this book is for you. Where did all these "freaks" come from? Why, Al and Lillian Binewski, of course. Al was raised in the Binewski Carnival Fabulon and when he could feel its popularity starting to wane he and his wife decided to start using narcotics combinations during her pregnancies to create their own unique freak show. That is messed up, right? I found this story at times fascinating, stomach-turning, and depressing. I really liked some of the characters and I hated others. It was a thoroughly disturbing ride, but I can't say it didn't keep me turning the pages wondering how it was all going to come crashing down.
