I think I may be rather in the minority as far as what I consider a favourite in this series.

In this one I really loved Phoebe and how head strong she was. Thank God someone finally stood up against Maximus (who again, did not make himself likeable).

In the earlier books James seemed to be very stalwart and black and white. In this book we finally saw another side of him. How serious he took his job as protector and how much he cared for Phoebe. Even if he did not want to admit it.

Also, the glimpses we had of his family were so great.

A stoic, caretaker hero, who only shows softness to his woman.

For the first time in this series we have a hero whose only passion is his lady. He’s all about her, she’s his cause, and this was refreshing. I love this series but each hero in it had some outside torture or cause that played a significant part of the plot. I liked them all, they were exciting, but this was such a nice change to have his entire focus be on her, keeping her safe, happy and helping her to find a freedom despite her blindness. Such a sweet story, I love a stoic hero who is only soft for his lady. The age-gap and class-gap were also well done, both main characters were strong, but Phoebe was a fierce and compassionate character and her frustrations with her circumstances but also, her optimism and bravery were so good.

The heroes in this series are cool too, every book has a different romantic hero type. It’s like a buffet, where if you read them all you will enjoy one of everything

Wow, I really loved the dynamic between the two leads in this one. They both clearly come to care for one another so deeply, and I appreciated the twist on a more typical bodyguard romance with well-written and conceptualized disability representation. I think this is the first time I've read a book with a blind protagonist, and I think Hoyt handled the representation with care.
