Forest Hills Bootleg Society ended up being pretty bleak, which was not at all what I expected. I found the pacing odd and often jarring. I did appreciate the little details that went into the character descriptions, they were SO specific and interesting.

Looove the art style + shading— if you like how Heartstopper looks, you’ll probably like how this book looks. Also loved the little character descriptions throughout. I feel like that’s something you miss out on in graphic novels where the text is only dialogue. (Some might say that’s a characterization cop out, but I disagree, especially for the stuff included in these descriptions—it’s not stuff that would naturally come up in conversation.)
Some of the humor and content in general was a little young for me, but the target audience seems to be MS/HS, so that makes sense. I wish I would’ve found this, like, just before Gatton! Romanticized boarding school escapades ✨
I have to say I was originally super disappointed with the ending, but after I sat with it for a while, I was feeling more conflicted than just straight up disappointed. It was realistic, I suppose~

"art is something that can save you. it can be used as a standard for your hopes, dreams, and beliefs. for some people, that art can become a trap. it can devour your identity. it can become an overwhelming and crushing weight. or it can be a conduit to making friends and developing lifelong relationships. it all depends on how you use the power that art can give us all" - dave baker, afterword. i loved this graphic novel. it was a sad ending, but realistically so. excellent
Loved the slice of life aspect and little details. Hated how quick the ending came. Life doesn’t have to be so cruel. So much development was happening and it all got cut short. Does Kelly learn how to be a good friend/girlfriend? Does Brooke realize she needs to solve her own loneliness before she should seek validation from others? Does Maggie develop a backbone and sense of self? Does Melissa ever do anything for herself? I guess we will never find out.
Four girls discover that they could make money by burning anime and selling it to the boys at school. Thus, they formed the bootleg society. Their town, religious leaders and families however have ideas of how they should behave. It was an interesting concept that adds depth to small towns and those who live there.
the only good thing that came out of this was sitting in a comfortable chair at the library while reading this. forest hills bootleg society had such a cool premise but it did not deliver
