this book was much better than mr wrong number by far. i have to say lynn painter has redeemed herself in my eyes in regards to her adult romance books. i absolutely loved this book. i feel like this is one of the few occasions where we get to see the fake dating trope happen, but we see the backstory that leads to them having to do so rather than it happening right at the start. what i also love about how the trope was executed was that, the entire book didn’t revolve around hallie having to find a date for her sister’s wedding. it just so happens that she needed one but the whole strings of failed dates didn’t have to do with her trying to find a boyfriend for the wedding, making the whole fake dating aspect of her and jack’s relationship feel much more organic. i had hoped that we wouldn’t get a third act conflict since the book was pretty short (less than 300 pages), but it made sense to have it since that little plot point was important in getting them two together into fake dating each other, and it would’ve felt icky if we had just brushed over the fact that hallie had never known about what jack had said to alex. their banter was great from the start and i just loved the overall humour of this book. i love the fact that we also got both their points of views since that’s what i prefer when it comes to romance books. i need to know what the love interests are thinking. i’m honestly tempted to do a reread and annotate my copy, i really loved this book. also what was the present she got him? i want to know!!!

I didn't want to put this one down. It was a quick read, just a couple hours, and I felt so connected to Jack and Hal. The character development was great and, while there were a ton of cliche tropes that the author used/flipped blended into one, I'm a sucker for a good romance novel and this was really enjoyable! You really got to see the full evolution of the relationship, which is often missing from a "friends to lovers" novel. I don't know what would have made it a full 5 for me, but it was a solid 4.5/5 stars. I may even come back and round up.
This was a flirty and fun fake wedding date plot where feelings are caught and there’s just one bed. But it’s all FAKE says the two main characters 25 times.
Okay first of all what a great funny novel. I love the banter between Jack and Hal. I would love for this book to be a movie. Perfect read for the summer.
Easy read, wasn’t really calling me back to read more/constantly read. A lot of skim reading. Didn’t read epilogue, didn’t feel that I needed it.
3.5 ⭐️ I enjoyed this book for the most part: the banter was good and the relationship build up was slow and steady. Honestly if it had not been for the third act breakup I think the rating would have been higher. The sequence of events in the last 100 pages was very strange to me and not the most enjoyable but everything leading up to it I liked! Hallie and Jack each had their own annoying qualities but their friendship and banter was fun to read.
