4.15 AVERAGE

I felt this was very predictable and a bit boring for most of the book. I’m surprised The Wish fell so flat for me when I typically devour Sparks books. The last few chapters is the reason I’m giving this book more than just a 1. It still made me tear up and smile. It was a sweet book but just a bit cliche.

I don’t recommend reading this book unless you are a die hard Sparks fan and want to read them all.

I read Nicholas Sparks with a known expectation for the type of book I’m reading. This one did not disappoint.  A very heartwarming story and Sparks was so good at painting the landscape of Ocracoke, NC. Aunt Linda was my favorite character. I rated a 4 because I wish the “twist” wasn’t so predictable early on.

Thanks to Jonathan Ball Publishers for a free review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The Wish follows two storylines. The first takes place in 2019, when an art gallery owner named Maggie receives a devastating diagnosis. Soon, a young man starts working for her, and they start to bond. Maggie tells him about her past, and her true love.
This is where the second storyline comes in – it follows a sixteen-year old pregnant Maggie, two decades earlier, as she is sent off to live with her aunt in a remote village. Here, she meets Bryce, and the two embark on an epic love story.

There wasn’t much plot to this book, which is to be expected of a romance-type novel. The few plot points that did occur were very predictable. I also did not feel especially connected to any of the characters. That being said, I still very much enjoyed the story.

It was a quick read, if a bit soppy at times (again, that is to be expected), and it is the perfect read for the festive season, since Christmas plays an important role in both stories. While this was not the perfect read, it did provide a lovely story to escape into.

I did enjoy Maggie’s character development when she was sixteen. She goes from a shallow, self-absorbed teen to someone who wants what is best for her loved ones, and who can accept responsibility for her own actions.

The relationships in this book were also very well written. Both the romantic relationships and the relationships between the families were complex and provided some extra depth to the story.

I loved the back and forth of young and older Maggie's story and how we got to know the characters surrounding her so deeply. It takes a second to get into but you feel as if you know these people personally.

Enjoyed the back and forth of different parts of Maggie’s life

3.5. This book took me forever to read bc of college and not having a lot of time. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I read it faster. But I was still eager to read it so it was pretty good. I didn’t really expect the last turn but it was a good ending.
