I picked up the Threads That Bind audiobook on a bit of a whim because it was immediately available from my library. I was looking for a romance subplot in an interesting fantasy world, and this book certainly delivered on that.
My main complaint about the book is that it’s a bit info-dumpy: we get a whole lot of information, and sometimes an example. It felt like the author just wanted a chance to flex all the ideas she had and wanted to include in the book but didn’t always get a chance to incorporate into the main plot.
I enjoyed our main character, a young person trying to reason through her own morals that were dictated, for most of her life, by her older sister. Kika Hatazopoulou does a nice job of writing strained sister dynamics, and building the world to require our main trio as parts of a whole was a really sleek way to execute on that idea.
This book does well as a YA book in terms of themes and character archetypes, but I wish that we would’ve gotten more of the world. I wanted to see more other borns, wanted to see what their magic did and how they fit into society, especially with respect to the main sister trio.
The plot was pretty predictable, but I did like that it kept taking us through hoops. I thought it was age appropriate, and I didn’t ever feel like I was being talked down to like I often do in YA novels.
Overall, this is a good initial installment on a series I’ll be continuing. With more space to expand, I think Hatazopoulou will be able to flesh out some of those ideas shat she clearly has and didn’t get a chance to deliver on in this book. I did read this book in a day, and I really appreciated how easy the world was to sink into.

I really liked this book. The use of mythology and the world building was very good. I finished it quickly because I needed to find out what was going to happen and it was an easy read.

Not without its faults, but the writing was solid, the twists were delightful, and the plot was well executed. I did find that the characters' responses to similar situations were a little inconsistent and the timing of some emotional reactions were poorly done in spots. Regardless, I will be coming back for the second book.

I very much enjoyed this. It had some concepts and ideas I had never seen in a book before and I loved the characters. I very much resonated with Io and some of her past traumas and that may be why I bonded to this book so much. Super excited for book 2 to come out!
