“There’s violence in kindness and kindness in violence”

I love the premise of this. Three sisters descendants of the Three Fates. One that weaves threads, one that enhances or changes threads and one that cuts threads. Io is the cutter and her relationship with her other sisters Ava and Thais are the center of this story.

The romance is quite angsty as it is seemingly unrequited for majority of the time. Edei who is her fated (according to their thread that connects each other) has a girlfriend and Io didn't want to force the fates on him. There was a sweet conversation at the end.
Essentially, Io lets it all out with Edei. That she feels guilty for not cutting their thread because she has feelings. However, she understands that both her and him have to consider if those feelings are due to their fate or genuine feelings.
I love their transparent conversations and both are quite similar. I rarely am convinced of a romance in YA books but I am convinced here. I can't wait to see where they go.

The flaw in this book is the pacing. It feels like you're in a nice car (original premise) however, the driver is braking constantly and as a passenger you're thrown around. But I feel that since the setup is basically done, the next book should be better. Especially where it left off here.

  • Descendants of lost gods
  • Mythology elements
  • Fated mates
  • A prophecy
  • Mystery
  • Sister dynamics
  • Non-binary & queer side characters

The I guess you’d call it “magic system” is cool, there are “other-born” people who are descendants of the Greek Fates (gods) who have special powers. Io and her sisters are Moira-born, descendants of Moirae the goddess of Fate, and can see/manipulate threads that tie every person to the things/people/places they love.

I found the world building beyond the descriptions of the other-born powers to be a little confusing or incomplete. I didn’t really get a sense for time period and there was no map or great description of the city this story takes place in. There were other cities or countries(?) that were mentioned, but it was had to understand how they all related in the larger world. And as there are some political things going on, it would’ve been helpful to understand that context. I think that’s the main struggle I had with this book.

It’s not necessarily slow to start, but I didn’t really get fully engaged in the story until the second half. It did have a strong ending and I will likely listen to the sequel.

I did do combination audio and physical. The audio was fine - nothing spectacular but not bad.

This was an entertaining, fast-paced, action-packed, quick read... It's a little embarrassing how long it took me to finish. I don't think it was the book's fault, though.

I really loved the atmosphere, setting, world-building and magic system. I just love a post-apocalyptic magical world with extreme weather and submerged/decaying cities built on the ruins of a destroyed civilization. That alone was enough to make me fall in love with the book. (It was surprisingly violent and gory, btw. Didn't expect that, tbh, but it worked for me) Pair it with complex characters, complex relationships (gotta love complicated sibling dynamics), and an intriguing mystery, and I'm all in. And don't get me started on the complex and confusing magic system, which might be a bit too much for the first book, but I really enjoyed it.

This wasn't perfect, though. As much as I liked how fast the plot progressed and how the characters were thrown from one dangerous situation to the next, I thought the protagonist's decisions and conclusions were a little too erratic. It felt out of character for some reason; a smart detective shouldn't jump to conclusions without enough evidence this often, while even thinking that things weren't adding up. Especially since it was so obvious in which direction all of this was going. It felt like the wrong conclusions had to be drawn to expedite the plot. It would have been so much better if Io had kept questioning everything, while others came to the wrong conclusions prematurely and ignored her protests.
Also, the romance had lots of potential, but the pacing wasn't working for me, either.

Still, I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the story despite it's issues and I'm definitely continuing the series. Can't wait to explore more of this fascinating world.

This book felt like a new take on the descendants of gods. I also enjoyed how it isn’t the traditional western pantheons of gods but more lesser known gods. There were some times where the story was hard to follow.
