Kind of lost track of what each type ‘other born’ actually does, but otherwise, this book was fine. Loved the super casual lgbtq+ rep, but I will not remember a single thing about this in a few months

This is a YA fantasy (that will hopefully become a full-fledged romantasy in book 2) of a dystopian Greek mythology-inspired world. Our main characters Io is a moira-born (descendant of the Moirai, the Greek Fates) PI investigating some suspicious murders with the help of Edei, second to the reigning mob queen, and the boy at the end of her rare Fate-thread.
The world building is fantastic and Greek-focused but in no way limited - all world mythologies seem to exist and are discussed. It's got the vibes of a noir detective story, with lots of twists and turns. The narrative is expertly written and woven to keep you guessing right up until the end. There's some very good commentary about capitalism, classism, racism, and general Other-ing of people with god-descended abilities. The romance is light and more a build-up of their partnership and friendship and burgeoning romance.
I love mythologies, and this unique twist on familiar figures was exactly my cup of tea

The MC has got to be the worst private detective ever. It is so clear how bad at her job she is, from one lead to another she jumped to conclusions without questioning the evidence. Frustratingly bad.
