***you must read A stone in the Sea first*** This book picks up right after A Stone in the Sea ends. This book will grab you from the start and pull at your emotions. You see where Baz starts changing who he fights for and puts first, and his "family" is behind him as usual. Shea is ready to fight and put her past behind her. Shea confronts old deamons and fights for her and Baz and their family. Baz learns that he needs to think first before he reacts because it is not just him anymore. I love seeing how they both grow and become one. So many emotions with this book. I loved seeing Baz change and grow, I loved seeing the band behind him and showing him they have always been there. I love seeing his brother take the step he needs to put the past behind him. This is a must read. I had to grab tissues a few times. I look forward to more in this series.

Lowkey had no idea when I first read book one.. but I was way too lazy to dive back into it. Sorry not sorry.

Luckily, Drowning to Breathe, didn't get struck by the second book syndrome. No, really - I liked it. Maybe it's because I listened to this and the third one but read the first one. No idea why I did that but I'm weird (so go with it).

Now if I remembered correctly, I think this ended right where the first book ended but not super sure. Just going with it. In it, we still get Baz and Shea. Oh lord, I still love them. These two are definitely not in a good place to start off with. Didn't expect that but it definitely tugged on my heartstrings. Secrets come out and people are in shock and don't know what to do - especially our two broken MC's.

Cue tears please.

Not going to lie, these two are my everything. I am so proud of myself for not being completely lost in this book because I enjoyed it all. I'm also really enjoying the growth between these two because they definitely need one another. This series has continued to be utterly amazing.

WOW!! Drowning to Breathe gave me all the feels. My emotions were all over the place! A.L. Jackson words are brilliant. This book picks up where A Stone in the Sea left off and it totally slayed me. More angst. More heat. More heart. More of everything and I loved every second of it. The love and bond between Shea and Sebastian is stronger than ever before. I almost can’t deal with their amazing connection. I could not put it down. It was the perfect ending for an absolutely wonderful and lovely couple. And side note, the way Baz lovingly interacts with Shea’s daughter, Kallie is so heart melting and ovaries exploding. He made me a swoony mess. I am completely obsessed with this series!!

Wow, what an emotional and angsty punch this story packed. A.L. Jackson left you with one heck of a bomb drop at the end of A Stone in the Sea. I didn’t walk but ran to Drowning to Breathe. Turns out, there was so much more to Sebastian and Shea than I was prepared for. I mean that twist, that connection these two shared I never saw coming and it left me absolutely speechless! I was truly living that one more chapter life because I simply could not put this story down.

A Stone in The Sea and Drowning To Breathe (Bleeding Stars 1 & 2) by A.L. Jackson

Narrated by Sebastian York & Andi Arndt

Books 1 & 2 in a series. These two are a duet. Rock Star Contemporary Romance.

I have had A Stone in The Sea by A.L Jackson in my audible library for years. Something made me think it was a dark ugly cry NA novel, and I was never in the right mood for that. But when going through my list of authors to read at Wicked Book Weekend, I decided to go for it. What a surprise! It’s more of a rock star novel than a new adult ugly cry, but there is elements of both.

Warning: While this is book 1 & 2 of a series, it’s also a duet. A Stone in the Sea ends on a major cliffy, so have the next on hand before you even start, because believe me, you will want it.

Sebastian “Baz” Stone is the lead singer/guitarist of heavy metal band, Sunder. He is an angry guy with a short temper, so he, the band and his little brother have to lay low in Savannah, Georgia for a while.
“My fucked-up family that consisted of a bunch of guys who were just as messed up as me.”

He found a local bar and his attraction to the waitress, Shea, can not be denied. She was a single mom who had no clue who the tattooed, broody man really was, all she knew was that she was drawn to him like she had never experienced.
“What are you doing here?”
“The same thing I’m doing every night, Shea. Thinking about you and wondering why the hell I can’t stop.”

They are both filled with so many secrets, and there is a lot to uncover in this book. While the attraction is instant, the relationship took it’s time developing.
"Because she saw me.
The real me. The girl didn’t give a fuck who the world thought I was or the way other people saw me. I’d been so fearful of her knowing, of it changing what we were…how we were.
But no.
Shea reached in to touch beneath it."

Thought this alternated points of view, I felt like I got a little more of Baz than I did Shea sometimes.
"She’d asked me what I wanted from her. The problem was I had no clue. All I knew was it was more. That I wanted more of her dark and her light and her heavy and her soft. I wanted more of her sweet breaths and more of her pounding heart.
I wanted more of her kisses
Fuck.
I wanted more of her kisses."

I loved how the first book was more about growing their relationship, while the second was more exciting and suspense-filled, but throughout it all you get to enjoy the growing love between the two.
“I don’t remember how to breathe without you.”

A.L. Jackson has a lyrical prose. To some, her wording may be a bit too flowery at times, but I really enjoyed it for a change and it added emotion and depth to what could have been a bit of a typical book. At first I also loved her style of repeating words. It made it feel musical. But by the end of the second book I went from loving it to despising it. It is such a powerful part of her writing and if it was used sparingly it may have been one of my favorite things about the books, but the style became so overused that it drove me crazy and took me out of the story every time. I may have enjoyed that part more if I read instead of listened, but honestly, I doubt it.
“And each time, he slipped a little deeper into my bones”

There are tons of twists and turns in this duet that you won’t see coming. Some are a little over the top, but that’s OK, I love following it all and seeing where it leads. I enjoyed that it moved to a little more of a suspense in the second book. It got so exciting I couldn’t put it down!

Likes:

  • •Compelling story that kept me guessing.

  • •Angsty as fuck, but not as much as I expected.

  • •I love a single parent book.

  • •Tons of heartfelt emotion.

  • •More bookmarks for quotes than I’ve ever had before.

  • •Her lyrical style of writing (at times).

  • •Though it’s a rock star novel, it doesn’t follow the regular rock star formula.

Dislikes:

  • •The style of repeating words 3 times was really cool at first and I loved it, but by the end it drove me crazy. It was WAY overused.

  • •This couple needed a break. So much shit thrown at them!

The Narration:

Sebastian York and Andi Arndt wit a slight southern accent were great in this, but they both sometimes sounded a bit more mature than their characters actually were.

The Down & Dirty:

I was pleasantly surprised by A Stone in The Sea and Drowning to Breathe by A.L. Jackson. These titles and the series title of Bleeding Stars made me think it was a super sad series about someone dying or something, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it is an angsty, well-written, sexy rock star romance that is filled with emotion. I definitely look forward to reading more by A.L. Jackson, and in fact, I have already bought When Lightning Strikes, the 3rd in the series.

Rating: 4 Stars, 4 Heat, 4.5 Narration

I only jumped into this one because I needed to know that Kallie was safe. But once again the writing style really bothered me. It just felt so repetitive. And I felt like it was dragging to me.

Part 2

The conclusion of Sebastian & Shae starts of gut wrenching, I cried & man that doesn't happen often. Actually this whole book tugged a little on the heart strings.

I'm so glad Austin finally grew a set and stood up for himself and becoming whole.
Kid deserves his own happy ever after.

Im also impressed that A.L Jackson didn't make her characters take the easy way out. That they did absolutely everything to protect, to love and to keep forever.
