"When a father calls a boy son, he's declaring his pride in him. I didn't feel this way about you, even when you got grown. You had accomplished many things, but you still weren't the son I wanted.
I know this hurts, but I owe you honesty. It's the last debt I'll ever pay. Hopefully, it'll set you free."
Reading this book helped me understand my own dad more. I had expected there to be more about his son and not so much about the dad's own life story but maybe that's the point - their own stories are the lens through which our parents try and fail to understand us.

Jacob is a dying man and this book is his last words to his son. He writes about how he was raised, what being a man and raising a son means to him, and the mistakes he has made as a father.
This book is one that will stay with me. It made me think of the ways toxic masculinity is passed down in generations especially in black families. It made me think of the pressures black men face in order to portray societies views of masculinity.
Jacob is a man with many flaws. He is also a man who grows and learns thing through reading and gaining knowledge. This book shows how important knowledge is and how reading can make you learn so much about yourself. And I’ll end with one of my favorite quotes from the book…“The more I read, the more I saw myself. Knowledge is a funny thing. It informs by exposing. It shows precisely how much you don’t know.”

I really enjoyed this book -- heart-wrenching for sure. Wondering how many made it through the book without crying (I know I sure didn't!).
