A transcendent and honest book about removing the shell of those who have harmed you.
Very educational, I recommend.

This is such a beautiful novel. The ending almost brought tears to my eyes. I loved the raw honesty and confessions that this book contained. It’s clear that Jacob wasn’t and still isn’t completely understanding/educated about his son in the end, but this story allows the reader to atleast understand his pov

What a brutally honest confession of a man’s failure as a father. I think many children from marginalized groups can relate or find something of value in this book. Oftentimes we wish our parents were different, and a lot of times they fail us. I don’t think we have to forgive them, but I think we can reach a level of understanding and sympathy for them. There were so many parts that brought tears to my eyes, and I couldn’t help thinking about my own father. How the toxic environment he grew up in hurt him, and how he inadvertently hurt my siblings and I, especially my mother. I think this is a necessary read for children of fathers from marginalized groups, or anyone who can relate to themes in this book (toxic masculinity, racism, growing up black, queerness, intersectionality, generational trauma, etc.)

It’s really hard for me to find the words for this one, because it was so good. I mean really, so good. Told from Jacob’s POV in the form of letters to his son Isaac, we see the words of a man on his deathbed saying all of the things he wished he’d said. It’s a really fast read, written very beautifully. I’m glad I went outside the box with my BOTM box for February, because I didn’t expect this one to be as good as I thought it was!
