I really need for every black man to read this book and I plan to recommend it to every single one I know personally. I unfortunately grew up with the type of man Jacob was. I never once saw my grandfather cry and he absolutely refused to let you know if he wasn’t feeling well. It worked my nerves for so long but I realized that he didn’t grow up knowing that he could share those feelings freely. And it’s said to say that a lot of our black men today go through the same thing. I want to reread this book again and again and again.

This time I listened to the audiobook (read by the author).
It was powerful.
Although the struggle to connect to his son was raw and hard, I’m glad to read it again.

4.5 stars. This is one of those books that opened my eyes to an experience that has not been my own. A deep character study that quietly follows the effect of generational trauma on one man's life and his journey of self-discovery.
