A truly heartbreaking story.
Well done Mr. Black.

I found this book very moving. It's a relatively linear narration, told through letters that allow the author to reflect on the events that have transpired and allow the reader to easily trace the emotions throughout the novel. It's a stirring rumination on the perils of toxic masculinity and how fathers risk perpetuating their own trauma on their children--maybe especially their male children--but also largely lack the tools to avoid that sad outcome. It also explores the shackles of racism and its generational weight in a way that never felt preachy or over the top. Overall, I found myself very touched by this book.

“Hurt is worse than anger, you know. Anger dwells in the head, then fades. Hurt lingers in the soul. It rearranges your feelings without your permission. It blinds you.”

I wanted to love this one. The premise and the author’s note primed me to expect a great novel. It was good, but the writing often felt forced and simplistic. The book is one long letter from a father to his estranged son, so perhaps the simplicity was meant to reflect the way this particular father would write. As a reader, it ended up feeling contrived.

Emotionally shattered is an understatement. By far is my favorite book of all time. I cried for DAYS!!  I don’t think there is anything else I can say besides it is a must read.
