What Remains by Wendy Walker

Elise is a cold case investigator who is faced with a horrible decision when witnessing a shooting at a department store. Dealing with the consequences of her actions, she becomes emotionally connected with one of the men in the store.

Wendy Walker may be my only auto-buy thriller author. I just love how she writes engaging mysteries with twists I usually don’t see coming, but they are not overly scary or graphic. I am always immediately hooked and entertained through the entire book and this one was no different.

I ended up listening to the audio which was excellent. Since this was told primarily in inner thoughts, the narration made it really come to life for me. I loved the unique point of view of a police officer being stalked. Her thoughts and clinical thinking was fascinating. It was a great combination of emotion and process. This was a suspenseful, creepy and engaging story!

Thank you to @blackstonepublishing for the ebook and audiobook! This one was out in June so you can go get it now.

Wanted to love this, but it was just okay. Not great, not bad. I liked the two main cops/detectives, but the main "bad guy" didn't seem to have a real reason for stalking all these women...idk it just didn't fully add up for me.

This book had so much promise. The plot really drew me in, but it was such a slow burn and quite predictable.

I heard good things about other books by this author, so I intend to still give more of her books a go.

Elise was very hard to connect with, I felt like she made a lot of poor decisions, really needed to work through the trauma she experienced in the beginning of the book but continued to lie and say everything was fine.

That just led to all her poor decisions which didn’t only affect her, but put her family and partner in danger. I was very irritated throughout the book, but I will admit I couldn’t quit reading.

I had to know what happened, I did predict some of it, but some was also a surprise. It was a duel POV with two separate cases that ended up connecting in a way.

This has a lot of police procedures and stalking throughout. It was a short read and I enjoyed it for the most part. I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. It was just mediocre for me.

Summary: Detective Elise Sutton quickly becomes a hero when she kills a shooter at a department store. Little does she know that by killing the shooter (and saving a man’s life) she’d be making a huge mistake. The man she saved grows obsessed with her, and so begins a game of cat and mouse.

Thoughts: After loving Don’t Look for Me, I was so pumped to read Wendy Walker’s newest release. Unfortunately, this one did not live up to the high bar Don’t Look for Me set. There were also a lot of moving pieces, which make it hard to follow at times. The Kill Room POV also disrupted the flow and didn’t seem completely necessary. Instead, it just added confusion.

3.5 ⭐️ Local detective Elise Sutton is a town hero after a trip to a department store led her to saving a man’s life while ending another. Ridden with guilt and unable to return to work, she finds herself connecting with the man who’s life she saved. The only problem is he is not who he says he is and now Elise finds herself in danger.

Wendy Walker is definitely an entertaining writer, and I always applaud her unique and fast-paced storylines. This definitely had the gripping moments I look for in thrillers, but there were also some details that just annoyed me (do not want to give spoilers). Also, while the story was primarily told from Elise’s perspective, there were chapters told from the POV of “The Kill Room.” Personally, I did not think these chapters added any additional information or suspense to the story, just confusion, and the story could have been told without them! The ending, however, was great, detailed and left me with no questions!

I enjoyed this one. Despite starting with a big, intense event right out of the gate, it took me some time to get into the story. The plot felt a bit slow, and I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Our MC, Elise, frequently makes some very questionable choices, which had me wanting to smack her at times. I did think the villain, Wade, was a really interesting character just in the decisions he made and the way he planned things.

Eventually, I became invested in seeing how everything would wrap up. So, while I wouldn't say I loved this one, it was an enjoyable read.

Thank you to librofm for the ALC and Thriller Book Lovers for putting this book on my radar!

Detective Elise Sutton is particular to working cold cases. She loves finding pieces and putting them in order. That’s her approach to her personal life as well, with her husband and two young daughters. One day when shopping for her daughters, she happens to be in a department store when a man comes in shooting. There, she has no choice but to disarm the gunman, shooting him to save a civilian. Though everyone hails her as a hero, inside Elise is crumbling. She is deeply troubled from killing a man and when she connects with Wade, the man she saved, she feels like she can finally move on. Until she finds out he is not who he says he is. She saved his life and now he is obsessed with her.

I really enjoyed the aspect of a woman balancing her career as a police officer and mom. It’s not something I have read before so it was interesting to me. Elise’s prior background in teaching, essentially, how to get away with murder was a fun addition too. Told in two timelines, we see Elise solving the puzzle this madman has thrust upon her while another story is unfolding. I was a little confused with how the two timelines fit together until they finally converged and it made sense. I also really appreciated the relationship of Elise and her partner, as they reminded me a lot of Stabler and Benson (from my favorite Law & Order!) The pacing was perfect and I listened to this in less than a day! Thank you to Wendy Walker for the advanced copy; “What Remains” releases June 13th!
