This book is just so much fun! A wild ride as one should expect from River Song. It plays with history in multiple ways and plays with reality too, hopping between River spending time with her parents, Melody Malone’s world, and ancient Egypt in the time of Cleopatra.
This is tied for my favorite New Series Adventures book with Borrowed Time by Naomi Alderman.
Definitely listen to this on Audio for a knockout performance from River Song herself, Alex Kingston.

“Death follows me, but maybe I could outrun death just this once.”
Oh, River Song, I miss you everyday. God, I miss her charming sociopathic wit with all my heart. The fact that Alex Kingston wrote and narrated this made the experience so much better. And there were sound effects. This was a whole production (as I’m told is common for Doctor Who audios). I loved how exciting and thrilling this adventure was and how River and Melody’s voices melded together to tell this story.
God, I especially loved the mentions of other characters, especially her parents and The Doctor, as well as mentions of past episodes. (And certain appearances at the end!!) Even the Stormcage details and aspects of her upbringing were interesting to see as well.
Ms. Alex Kingston, please write more River novels. (Or appear in the show because you’re my fave).

Doctor Who: The Ruby's Curse by Alex Kingston with Jacqueline Rayner is a River Song | Melody Malone mystery which travels across time and space with the help of a vortex manipulator.
River and Melody are both hunting for the Eye of Horus, which is said to hold the secret about where to find the tomb of Cleopatra. However Melody is just a fictional character of River's overactive imagination whilst she is locked up in Stormcage...or is she?
This story really does jump around between Gaul in 49 BCE and Stormcage in AD 5147 which sometimes makes it difficult to follow with it being a story within a story. What I really did enjoy was listening to Alex Kingston narrating the audiobook!
I borrowed a copy of this book from Taunton library and listened to it on BorrowBox. I read this for prompt interrogative word in the title for the 52 Book Club mini challenge May 2024.

ok its finally time to review this book
firstly: alex kingston is SO GOATED for writing this book!!!!! she did not disappoint
the story is original and how it plays out was incredibly unexpected (and expected at the same time in a good way). the story also somehow gets incredibly bonkers but that also seems sort of fair since it comes from the DW world.
i love the small nuances and references in the book too. every episode/storyline river appeared in on the show was subtly references and i ate it the fuck up!!
i cant give it the full five stars (trust me, i want to) because some aspects got incredibly convoluted (and thus confusing), and the ending was a bit rushed. i still think its phenomenal that this book even exists and if alex writes one of these books again trust i will read it as fast as i can.
