I really enjoyed this book. It had many relatable aspects and thought provoking messages. I think this book changed me a lot, for the better or for worse? We'll find out. I will say there was some racism in it but then again the time period it was made in it was sadly the norm, it doesn't take away from the message still in my opinion.

3.5 stars

I knew nothing about this book going into it. About halfway through I had to look up a little summary to try to figure out what the point was because it seemed kind of rambling. I did find it interesting, but it wasn’t a favorite for me.

‘A bad dream.-
To a person in the bell jar, blank and stopped as a dead baby, the world itself is a bad dream.-
A bad dream.’

Outside of the blatant racism & outdated views, this book is scarily relevant to how I imagine a lot of young women feel today.

I don’t think ive ever read a book where the main character is so heavily tied to who the author is, but that certainly makes it more human & ‘real.’ Obviously a lot of this novel is directly taken from Sylvia Plaths own struggles. Basically one lengthy cry for help. I’d argue the ending is hopeful, which makes the real life ending all the more tragic. She was hopeful once, or at least she wanted to be. Rest in peace, Sylvia.
