In the 7th installment of the series, Commissario Brunetti is called in to investigate after the body of a young man is found in a field outside of Venice. It seems likely that the body is that of a prominent Venetian family’s son and heir who was kidnapped several years before. Brunetti’s investigation leads him into crimes and scandal that some hope would remain buried.

Leon has a tried-and-true formula for her novels, threading themes between Brunetti’s professional and personal life and continuing to solidify his character. I don’t know that I’ll ever get through all 30+ novels in the series, but I can rely on them as a palate cleanser and a quick audiobook listen when I’m not sure what I’m craving. I think fans of Louise Penny’s Three Pines series would enjoy a trip to Venice with Commissario Brunetti while they wait for the next Gamache mystery.

it was a fun to read as a traveling book but not much substance as a mystery beyond that tbh

Spoilers all the way.

Once again Donna Leon manages to hit on several unsavory but familiar stories of Italian happenings.

A dead body is found in a small village. The body is found because an old farmhouse has been bought by a rich German doctor who is retiring to Italy (familiar story 1).

The discovery of a family crest on a ring reveals that the dead body is that of a kidnapped scion of a rich and famous Venetian family from 3 years ago. A demand was sent by the kidnappers for 7, then 5 billon lire. The police immediately froze the assets of the family so the kidnappers would not be paid but the kidnappers never contacted the family again and there was no news of the son until now (kidnapping of rich kids is familiar story 2.)

Brunetti discovers that the son (Roberto) had been quite sick before the kidnapping and finds out that he was suffering from a terminal case of radiation poisoning. It seems that his family had been trafficking in nuclear weapons that was available due to the fall of the USSR (weapons trafficking is story 3). As the son could not be saved and if it came out that he was dying from radiation poisoning, the weapons trafficking story would come out and the family's reputation would suffer again (the patriarch's father had been one of those who reported the Jews to the Nazi's during WW2). So the patriarch decided to fake a kidnapping to hide the son and his condition but everything is unraveled as Brunetti investigates.

Though Donna Leon includes a lot of corruption and bad business practice in Italy, there is also a lot of good. Brunetti, members of his family, many of his friends and common people do not like the corruption and bad practices and understands the damage it does to the fabric of Italian society. This is a common and ongoing thread in all the books in the series. Other ongoing threads are the cheating of Italian taxes by the common citizen, corruption of politicians and mismanagement of the national health care system.
