“I cannot make you understand. I cannot make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself.”
Audiobooked. This was an extremely strange one. I’m all for the weird stories (they tend to be my favorites). And this surely fits into that category. It was extremely sad when you think about it.
Part of me felt that the stagnant plot represented the monotonous everyday of caring for Gregor once he turned into a bug.
I thought of a few interpretations of the story once I finished. One being the feelings of those that become caretakers for their older family members. I don’t want to delve too deep into this, however it was one of the first things to come to mind.
Another plays into what the “metamorphosis” could be. To me, Gregor and the members of his family undergo a metamorphosis, specifically his sister. She went from a young girl who enjoyed shopping and depending on her brother for income to become his caretaker. Through the lens of historical and gender theories, it read like she was fulfilling her role of the time period. Even her parents mentioning how beautiful she’s become (another metamorphosis) and that they should find her a husband. Two roles that have largely been associated with womanhood.
I do think I’d appreciate this a bit more if I read a physical copy I could mark up and write out my thoughts a bit more cohesively. But these were a few I thought of a few days after thinking about it.

This is an incredible way to confuse people that have never experienced mental health issues, which further strengthens the point kafka is trying to make. That is fucking awesome, still a little bit too confrontating for me right now, this was a difficult read while struggling with my mental health as of late.

the book questions what it means to be a person in society and if you are even considered human if you provide no value or contributions to the world around you. in a way i feel like this is how the world treats people with disabilities.
witnessing his deteriorating relationship with his sister is so tragic since you can really tell that they have such a strong bond and love for each other even though there is no human interaction between them in the entire book.
also there was a passage in here that gave me war flashbacks to my toxic job but it was v validating.
