Grindle writes good crime stories, usually with interesting characters and great settings. This one, set in Florence, Rome and Ferrara, didn't live up to expectations at all. I've been to all three cities but none was as vividly described as Florence in Grindles excellent The Faces of Angels. The backstory about Angela and Antonio didn't engage me at all, and I really didn't care what happened to the abducted student or her secretive stepmother. And haven't the Red Brigades been used in fiction enough already?

This was a fun read. Nothing super spectacular or surprising but it is a good mystery filled with intrigue.
A young woman is kidnapped and though you feel that is the most important that is happening, there are a lot of other factors that play a part. Politics, love, values. It is sometimes hard to know what the book really is about. As the end nears it is hard to put this book down.
I did have a problem with the POV changes. Sometimes they were pretty sudden and not always clear which character was the current POV, it took a few lines to figure out.
The developments in Enzo his love life could not really interest me.
I did feel the need to go on the internet and look up situations that were being sketched, political, pictures, and places that were mentioned.

Detective thrillers are just not my thing (except for Robert Galbraith's). Nothing bad about this per se, but nothing keeping me reading eitehr

I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. The setting, plot, characters and pace were all perfect. I got absorbed in this story and could see all the people and places in my mind's eye as I was reading. Very well written and put together. I think I've found a new favourite author!
