Beautifully written and hauntingly sad, this book keeps you reading even though you’d really rather not know. Each character struggles with their evils, coming to terms with how their pasts have affected them, brought them together, and torn them about. You begin reading for the plot but stay reading because the characters draw you in. Switches in perspective feel natural, and stories told from multiple viewpoints feel fresh instead of overly-explained. A difficult balance to reach in a book with complicated intertwining stories that stretch generations, but the author masterfully crafts this narrative that sticks with you, almost uncomfortably so.

Bumped the rating up to 5 because I just watched the film and it pales in comparison. Somebody should adapt it again as a miniseries. 8 episodes, 2 for each part of the book, and give the story’s ending the horrible justice it deserves (complimentary).
