Not my usual genre but very readable, may find I have to read more by this author. Read all of Gillian Flynn's books and she cited this as a favorite of hers in an interview

It's just like the movie - which is excellent also.

The story opens with a childhood tale of Sean, David, and Jimmy's "friendship." When the three boys are playing, David is abducted and molested. He returns four days later, and true to form during this time period, everyone just pretends nothing happened. There is your red herring for the murder of Jimmy's daughter years later. A murder that Sean is investigating.

The character and plot are a little cliche. I like my mystery's to move a little more quickly (action) and linger a little less on character development (for no particular reason). The ending was the best part, but it took too long to get there.

I watched the movie a few years ago. And reading the book bow, the movie seems to follow the book pretty close. Which is something that doesn't happeb often now.

One thing I really appreciated about this book was the fact that we actually got to know the character who dies. Most murder mystery's start out with a body but because this one you got to meet and know the character first it made you care WAY more about the murder because you almost felt the grief along with the others. However my biggest gripe from this book is the way they portrayed SO that whole area just rubbed me the wrong way. Overall this was definitely one of the better thrillers i've read in a long time and I do highly recommend it.

What a well-written, ugly read.

Hadn’t read a mystery book like this in a while, so it was a nice change of pace. A little disappointed that I figured out who did it about halfway through the book… the psychology of Dave’s character was pretty intense. Wasn’t ready for that… Overall, a solid story and I’m looking forward to see how it translated to a movie.

Stunning. The characters were so real… couldn’t put it down. I randomly picked up another Dennis Lehane that was on the hotel shelf during my honeymoon and enjoyed it very much but never came back to him. But will now be seeking out more. It really felt like a master at work letting it fly.
