funny medium-paced

A fine, funny novel so much in its time (written in 1993, published in 1998) that reading it now can almost transport you to an era where people’s perspectives were fueled by a perspective of sex as this sort of magick that could justify outrageously wrong decisions. The politics of the plot can be analogized to real-life races before and after its time in the zeitgeist.

The ending is different from the movie adaptation, a movie that I love. And that made the breezy read worth the time, because both endings make sense in a way. And one doesn’t win over the other decisively though I do prefer one more. I’m not saying which, though.

I liked the literary technique--each of the main characters tells a portion of the story from their perspective, swapping through as the story progresses. I didn't really get invested in anyone, though. I guess that I was a little disappointed, since Perrota has been on my to-read list for a long time and I finally got the books. I see a comparison to Hornby on the cover, but somehow the male protagonists created by Hornby have greater depth than these shnooks.

Clever, and entertaining, but not funny or fun.

Tom Perrotta's one of my absolute favourite authors and I'm never disappointed in his work. It's interesting to re-read this again after many years (and having read many more of his books). It's similar in structure to The Leftovers, Little Children and The Abstinence Teacher and yet much shorter and more focused. A fun, quick, read.

I'm happy to discover that I still love this book, years after reading it for the first time and seeing the movie. It's so sad and funny, and the POV switches push the novel forward.

Just like watching the movie.

I definitely prefer this to the movie!
