Election

Picked this one up randomly at B&N as part of a general effort to branch my reading out beyond titles /
authors I’m aware of - and I REALLY enjoyed it. Perrotta walked so Franzen could run, truly

Another excellent little book by Perrotta. I think everyone knows this story, have at least heard of the movie.

I preferred Little Children, by the same author--so I guess not only doe he have a way with words I like, but also a way with perverts and weirdos which appeals to me, gulp--however this is a quicker, faster, less-weirdo and fun read which I polished off on the same day.

Highly recommended if you're after something lighthearted, well written and swift. Ideal for a flight, work trip, or if your brain wants an easy ride to Pleasureville.

fast-paced

Quick read, half on the flight to Louisville and half on the flight back. Entertaining look at the author's forte - life in the relatively comfortable suburbs. Of course, the relative comfort is in a constant process of being disturbed.

Election was fine.

Author Tom Perrotta writes his tale of an irregular high-school student body election from the first-person perspectives of a number of characters: teen girls, teen boys, middle-aged janitor, thirty-something teacher. And yet they all sounded very similar in voice, in word choice, in style. It was the author's voice, style, despite the different headers with different character names. And that style is, again, just fine.

And, yeah, the election was handled improperly, but it still felt like the author was trying to present it as a very high-stakes affair when it just didn't feel that way. The whole novel is rather flat, the tone not really varying even when it's telling about teen-teacher trysts and marital infidelity.

So, Election: it's OK but this one didn't really land with me.

This book is definitely not bad, per se. I just didn't love as much as I expected I would. It was a quick read. Perotta is a decent writer. The action flows really well, and he does a good job of hooking the reader into the story.

The problem is that the book is superficial. It is too short to really examine the characters in depth and give the reader any real insight of value into their motivations. Tracy and Mr. M needed a great deal more depth. I didn't get invested in any of the characters. I didn't care what happened to them. I found that as much as I enjoyed the book when I was reading it, it didn't stay with me when it was over

I would say that the book is worth reading, if you haven't seen the movie. I wouldn't, however, rush to read the book, or spend alot of money on it. If you can find a cheap used copy, or it's available in your local library and there's nothing else available that you're dying to read, this book is certainly worth reading -- it won't take long, and it is engrossing. Just don't expect it to be anything special.

I watched this movie a million yrs ago, wanted to read now so I can read the sequel.

Excellent novel about high school angst, just trying to get by, and horrible people who I kept rooting for even worse things to happen to them.

The book isn’t always better than the movie.

Snarky and scathing, and read-in-one-sitting enjoyable.
