There are books I love because they're simply brilliant, beautiful, and well-crafted and then there are books I love because they feel personal like somehow I was meant to find them. This one feels personal and mixes so many elements together that mean something to me that I just feel lucky to have found it. I can't pretend to review it objectively.
I love the characters, but they're not what sets it apart.
Take one of my childhood favorites, "The Westing Game", add a bunch of cultural references relevant to the micro-generation that is one-part Gen-X and one-part Millenial, and set it in Somerville, MA where I lived during during one of the most transformative times in my life...and you have a book that I don't know how to review other than to say I loved everything about it and I'm too close to it to be objective.

I picked up this book because of the name... Mooney!! I'm a Mooney!! I was surprised to find out that this book takes you on an adventure around Boston, my birthplace! The author clearly did her research (or is from here) because she was true to the city and the surrounding area. This book was a mystery, about death, and includes a treasure hunt. It was a fun read and one I will definitely come back to. I loved it so much! It was such a fun read!
I received TUESDAY MOONEY TALKS TO GHOSTS by Kate Racculia in a book box last year and it sounded like something I would really enjoy. Not quite sure why it took me this long to actually read it, but I was glad to finally pick it up!
TUESDAY MOONEY TALKS TO GHOSTS follows the title character, a loner who really only has a few friends and those are more because they’ve insinuated themselves into her life. When a massive Edgar Allan Poe themed treasure hunt is launched in the wake of an eccentric billionaire’s death with potential billions on the line, Tuesday is one of many who decides to join in the hunt.
Tuesday loves a good puzzle and her friends are intrigued. Added to those aiding her is a handsome and intriguing young man who clearly has secrets he’s keeping. The treasure hunt will bring danger and secrets as they get closer to the big prize and the competition gets more serious.
This was a fun read! I can definitely relate to some aspects of Tuesday Mooney! Her desire to stay in, enjoy a good puzzle (or in my case a book) and step away from the pressures of the outside world was relatable even before all that is going on in the present day! Still I can also relate to her curiosity about an Edgar Allan Poe themed treasure hunt, though I probably wouldn’t have been as quick to act! Tuesday may be an introvert, but clearly someone who collects people to her and I enjoyed the cast of quirky characters that come together.
Tuesday is also dealing with a very real trauma from the past which is still haunting her in the present day. The title implies talks to ghosts, but the text leaves you to wonder whether this is meant to be literal or figurative. Either way, Tuesday’s reflections on friendships of the past and the present adds an extra layer to the fun mystery of the book.
Overall this was a fun read full of fun adventures and just enough mystery and intrigue and ghosts to make it a good read for fall!

I love Poe. I love theater. I love scavenger hunts. I love eccentric people. I love houses. I think many of the allusions to Poe in the book will be lost on people who aren’t as familiar, but I really enjoyed the ride.
A thoughtful and heartfelt adventure about life and death, love and loss, the weight of grief, and the essentiality of true friendship. Also, ghosts. Especially when the ghost of your best friend literally saves your life. I loved getting to know the characters in this book, and as they grew to trust and depend on one another, I loved them even more. It’s hard to trust again when your heart has been broken, whether it was by the death of a parent or best friend, or the steady beat down of a disappointing family. But having friends is vital to our very survival, and essential to building a happy, healthy life. No one can do everything on their own, and having someone you can rely on to help you through your downtimes is invaluable. This book is littered with wonderful ideas and quotes, but here are two that especially stood out to me.
“Having someone care about you makes you want to give a shit especially if you’re having trouble caring about yourself.” - Dory
“I know you don’t think of being friends with Ned as being “just” anything... Don’t cheat your friendships. Don’t ask them to mean less to you than they do, or think they only have value if they’re a stop on the way to a “real” relationship... All relationships are real. Friendship can be as deep as the ocean. It’s all a kind of love, and love isn’t any one kind of thing.” - Tuesday

It took a lil bit to get into the book but overall it was a cute, light read. I was hoping there would be a bit more to the treasure hunt, but I guess not all books can have Ready Player One treasure hunt-esque details. The banter between the characters was well done, and I genuinely enjoyed all of the relationships between the characters. Also just a big fan of spooky things. Not super common you see a girl that presents as goth that's seen as the cool girl to everyone else. Would love a book on just Vincent Pryce.

A fun, witty read. The pacing didn't quite keep up with what I'd expect from this sort of plot, but still really enjoyed it.
As a 20 something who's unemployed during a global pandemic, and not really sure what to do with her life, I very much appreciated the journey these characters went on. Glad I finally got around finishing it! Reading slump? Idk her.
The title made me think this was a kids book. YA, at minimum, but maybe something I could share with my 10-year-old. It's not. This is a book for grownups. Grownups who like games and mysteries and adventures. I found this enormously entertaining. The characters were fully realized and compassionately handled, but that came second to the plot. (The way I like it!)
It's not necessarily a book I'm going to be out there yelling everyone should read. It probably won't go on my best of the year list (that's pretty stiff competition!). Those are the main reasons I give books 5 stars, but I'm tired of giving everything I liked a 4, I guess. It would have been a shame if I, personally, hadn't read this so 5 it is.
