I loved these issues so much! I ship Betty/Archie in the comics, and it looks like it is FINALLY headed in that direction. This was funny and sweet and sad and all that is wonderful about Archie.

The covers of these issues are beautiful. The artwork is no Fiona Staples but it's gorgeous. I think this is an adventure worth taking. I like that it's lighter than the show even with no romance between Betty and Jughead. I even like this whole Veronica-Betty-Archie love triangle, but to be clear, I still hate Veronica for some reason.

So I guess up next is Riverdale? I have never watched the show but I really enjoyed this series. Hope it doesn't get too crazy and dark as the ads seem to imply.

2.5 Meh, it wasn’t as good/compelling/entertaining as the previous volumes.

This was the first collection of the reboot I read since watching Riverdale, which takes a lot of liberties with the Archie characters. Waid's take on the characters is much more traditional, which isn't a surprise since his notes in the first volume were that he wanted to do no harm to the characters. After Betty's accident in the last collection, though, I wondered if he had forgotten about that promise.

Waid wraps up that story arc well, concluding the events without resorting to cliches or obvious resolutions. He also avoids the "woman in a refrigerator" trope by having the accident affect Betty's own resolve, instead of having it as a reason to develop the other characters. That happens, too, but it's not the primary result of the accident. I had concerns at the end of Volume Four because it seemed like he was taking that route, but he pulled it off well.

I grew up on Archie, so I'm the target audience for this title, but I think it's doing some impressive things with the characters. Where Riverdale takes the license as a place to begin a noir story that does what it needs to with the characters, regardless of their background, Archie is staying faithful to the characters as they've been for so long. It's no surprise that I'm preferring the comic to the show (and I do like the show!).

It took me a while to read this. I will admit that I have been gobbled up by my Netflix account lately and have been reading little, but I think its anxiety more than stories. I have been in the Crown, Queen's Gambit and Glee. Anyway.

I'm trying to get my reading groove back. I have Archie from last year. At the end of the last volume, Bettye was in a car accident and this volume is all about the town dealing with dear Bettye being out of commission. It is plain how much Bettye is important to the whole town of Riverdale and they all miss her.

Archie is dealing with Bettye and Roni and Bettye's dad wants to keep Archie out of Bettye's life forever. Reggie is in jail, which is fun, but he gets out at the end and it's too soap opera to be believable. Still, you can't keep Reggie down.

This was a great forward motion for the story and interesting, but Bettye is standing by the end of the volume and if you are going to do something like this with a character, it shouldn't be so quick to heal. Soap Opera's always do that and it's cheap writing I think.
