Above all, this book is brilliant because of the lovable, sincere, constantly yet believably hopeful narrative voice of Alex. I heard literally a random paragraph of this book read aloud at a conference and knew I needed to buy it. The story is fresh, the secondary characters full and real and complex, the theme heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once, but over all that, the voice Cheng has created is extraordinary. This book is a middle grade master class in voice.
This book was great. The first person writing was charming and the characters felt rich and dynamic. This is a perfect book for middle grade kids who need a slightly new perspective to develop some empathy.
I was really disappointed in this book. I went in to it with great expectations as I had seen people say that it was the best book that they had read since Wonder. Perhaps that was the problem, however, I feel like it threw in way too many hot topics for one child's book. A cheating dad, mentally ill mom, newly found half-sister who drank too much and spent an evening in a closed room with a man (implications abound), periods, etc. I simply felt that the book tried to put too many controversies in a book without enough meat to support the working out of said controversies. None of these issues are jaw dropping in themselves but when presented to children, they need to be addressed or handled in some way not breezed over. That said, the story was lacking for me.
See You in the Cosmos was pushed on me at ALA MW by an eager and enthusiastic publicist. To be honest, I wasn’t that excited about it, because middle grade. And this didn’t look like one that would have a ship. However, that publicist did me a solid, because this book is a truly fantastic debut.
The audiobook of See You in the Cosmos is magnificent. There’s a full cast, as well as some background sounds. It’s like listening to a play. Random House actually hired a kid to play Alex Petrovski, and he does an amazing job. I can rely on Random House to do a great job with their audiobooks, but See You in the Cosmos stands out.
Alex Petrovski has an amazing voice. He’s intelligent and has this incredibly positive outlook on life, despite the fact that he’s dealing with some tough circumstances. Alex embraces those around him, and he never holds their flaws against them. He’s a little baby cinnamon roll that you just want to protect. I didn’t really bond with the other characters so well, but Alex is a delight.
If you’re thinking about reading this one, I highly recommend this stellar audiobook.

This was a wonderful, imaginative story about an 11 year old boy obsessed with rockets and space. He travels with his dog to New Mexico for a rocket-launching event and meets many amazing people on the way. This novel covers many big issues in a very sensitive way. Some of these issues include: abandonment, neglect, and mental health issues. This book was recommended to me by a young patron with very good taste.
Es un libro tierno, con algunas frases y conceptos interesantes. Cuesta arrancarlo pero eventualmente se hace mas agil. De todas formas no tiene una gran profundidad ni una epifania deslumbrante.
I liked it. The voice of the kid who tells the story was super sweet n charming, n had some nice quotes even if i didnt write them down. "la vida es cuatridimensional". anyway this kid's life sucks n it's pretty bittersweet seing how he faces all of that with his genuine kind approach. so im torn, i wasnt as touched by the story as i was supposed to be, i think. but still, there were some rlly good bits where alex makes reflections about life n stuff.
I could cry you buckets of tears over this book! The form of narration as ipod recordings makes the audiobook format work better than reading a physical book, at least it does in my opinion. I loved the different characters, especially Alex of course and how curious and excited and loving he is. I was so anxious about how things would turn out the whole time. Alex’s journey is compelling and very emotional and inspiring.
It would be impossible to use spoken word in an effort to reveal my love for this novel. I am not what once would call a fan of space, or science in general, but my love for this book knows no bounds.
The narration in this novel is absolutely splendid. I adored the usage of recordings to tell a story, as it really allowed for a conversation-style narration. Alex's perspective on the events that occurred in the novel was innocent and refreshing to read. Sometimes, it's nice to see the world through another lens.
All of the characters in the book were startlingly different and refreshingly real. Their entrance into the story did not seem scripted or serendipitous, it flowed well. They weren't perfect, but they were admirable in their conquests and actions. For the most part, at least.
What really made me love this novel was the fact that they were essentially traveling along the west coast. Road trips are always entertaining to read about, and my infatuation with the west coast is unrelenting. The imagery of their travels was stunning, and I was constantly in awe by the places they visited.
See You in the Cosmos honestly changed my life, and I will praise this book until my last days.
