This was a cute, feel good book with some serious topics covered as well. I appreciate the age-appropriate writing that introduces helpful ways of thinking and being in the world. It's also told in a unique way with Alex making recordings on his Golden iPod that tells the whole story from start to finish. I think I found this book for free somewhere (don't recall where - maybe the little free library a couple years ago).
"I told him I'm more responsible than a lot of thirteen-year-olds I know. I said I'm more responsible than even a lot of fourteen-year-olds. But he said it doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is your real age, and I said that's really stupid because kids are different. They should give everyone a test to see how responsible they are and then give them a responsibility age. I know I'd be at least thirteen then because I can already cook and take care of a dog." pg. 21 [I know I would have agreed with this when I was younger - wanting to grow up and be older back then; then it becomes the opposite when you get older]
"She gave me her business card also and she said if I'm ever looking for a summer internship, they'd be glad to have me. I asked her what's an internship and she said it's a job where you get paid in knowledge. I told Elisa that the internship sounds really interesting but I'd like to keep my options open because Mr. Bashir already pays me five dollars a week to help him stack magazines at his gas station. I told her he lets me take home the science magazines he doesn't sell every month, so with my job right now I get paid in knowledge but I get paid in money too. Elisa said that I'm a tough negotiator." pg. 62
"ALEX: Guys, I wish you could see this right now. Las Vegas is straight ahead in front of us and with all the lights it looks like a galaxy or a nebula of orange and white stars. And the way we're going toward it and the cars around us are going toward it, it's almost like we're moths going toward a light on somebody's porch--
[chalkpad sounds]
[Alex laughing]
ALEX: Zed says they should call it Moth Vegas." pg. 94
"TERRA (laughing): That too, but I'm talking more about a kind of energy that two people have. It's like . . . something you can almost see, and feel, that's clear to anyone who's there with them. Like, even from the way they talk to each other--you can hear it in their voices.
ALEX: You can tell they're in love.
TERRA: Exactly." pg. 203

yeah this is basically a children’s book but that doesn’t mean i didn’t get teary eyed reading it.
Quirky and improbable but an interesting ride as the reader follows along with 11-year-old Alex as he searches for his family.
I had a very hard time finishing this one for two reasons: one, Alex's first person POV was difficult to stick with (although I understand the reasoning for it) and two, it felt like it took way too much time to get a better understanding of what was going on with Alex's mom. Despite those challenges, I appreciated the message of the book and felt like Alex was a very endearing character.
Absolutely wonderful book, will be buying multiple copies as gifts, more to follow.
An adorable upbeat story. Much better than I had anticipated.
A beautiful and emotional story about a warm hearted, wonderful boy and his journey of discovery.
Really 3.5 stars. Different narration style- stream of consciousness-ish. It was an interesting story. Overall, I liked it.
