I listened to this book on audio, which is absolutely the way to experience it, because the book is written as a series of iPod recordings! It is at the same time fanciful (an 11 year old boy sets off unaccompanied from Colorado to Arizona to Nevada to LA) and realistic. It deals with hard issues— infidelity, mental illness, financial struggles, and is thus sometimes a heavy read. But it does have redemption and hope, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Wow. The audiobook for this book is phenominally recorded!!! Definitely the medium I would recommend reading it in!!!
Enjoyed many aspects of this book, but several topics might keep it in the middle school world and not my elementary.
Loved the full cast recording! Plus Alex was so cute.
I really loved and enjoyed the adventure of Alex and his dog named after his hero, Carl Sagan. Alex is a pure boy. Terra was right, Alex is a sweetheart. This book is enjoyable to read/listen. I prefer to listen to the Audiobook instead.
Alex has a dream to reach the stars. He records messages about life on Earth with his iPod. The plan is to send his iPod to space on his rocket. There is a rocket show competition where he is signed up to do so. Along the way he discovers more than he expected. And he gets by with a little help from his friends.
If you are a parent getting this book for a child, be forewarned that adult themes occur and an eleven year old kid has to figure out what to do. This is a mostly happy story. There are themes your child may want to ask you about. If you can borrow or buy the audiobook, listening to the story added to the experience.

The author did such a great job of capturing the voice of a precocious, but also immature in some ways, 11yo boy. I felt like I was listening to my own space-loving 10yo's stream of consciousness! The story was funny and sad, sweet and engaging. I definitely needed Kleenex a time or two! Great for 5-8th graders.
This was such an enjoyable read! 'See you in the Cosmos, Carl Sagan' follows the story of an 11-year-old boy named Alex Petroski who's mission is to launch his golden iPod into space. As he sets out on this goal, he meets an array of characters and his story takes many twist and turns. This was a fun read that I can see being made into an indie film easily.
The audiobook version was so so good! Done as a full cast, it felt like I was listening to a production instead of an audiobook. Had some minor issues with the story which is why I only gave it 4, but I would highly recommend the audiobook.
