As a huge cat lover (I have 14 of them), I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, the writing was subpar, maybe even bland. I don't know if it's a translation issue, but alas. Furthermore, the constant shift between the cat's perspective and the third-person narrative also created a sense of dissonance.
I really liked the heart-warming moments between Sotaru and Nana, and I enjoyed seeing the story through Nana's eyes. However, all the flashbacks in-between bored me, and I felt that plenty of them were quite irrelevant to the story as a whole. I wanted to be taken along on this bittersweet journey with Nana and Sotaru, but instead, half of the book consisted of memories from Sotaru's past. Some of them were relevant for context, but others just dragged on.
Despite all the things I didn't like, I would be lying if I said the ending didn't bring me to tears. The last portion of the book was so bittersweet, and it moved me. It makes up for the other 60% of the book that I didn't quite enjoy. I'm gonna go and give my cats a big hug now.

This book is set in Japan. It was originally written in Japanese and later translated to English. At the start of this book, a stray cat likes to sleep on the hood of a van. The owner of the van, Satoru, discovers the cat on his van and starts to feed him. They start to develop a bond. The cat is hit by a car and seriously injured. He drags himself to the vicinity of the van. He cries until Satoru discovers him. Satoru takes him to a vet so he can be treated and then takes him into his apartment to recuperate. Satoru names the cat Nana. Satoru and Nana decide to live together. From here, we jump around 6 years in the future. Satoru has to get someone to take Nana in. Satoru does not want to do so. We don't learn why he needs to do this until the latter part of the book. Satoru and Nana travel in the van to several former classmates/friends of Satoru and one of his relatives to try to find a person or persons who will be able to take Nana in. Part of the story is told by Nana thinking in the first person. Other parts of told in the third person by the human characters. We see Satoru and his classmates/friends and relative in the present day. Then we go back to the past and see how they initially met and their early relationship. This book was a lot deeper than I expected. It was sad in parts. I enjoyed reading it a lot.

I was recommended this story as a tear-jerker by my aunt, a cat-lover. I loved our narrative voice, Nana the cat - captured hilariously by the author! Nana was kind and amusing, recognising both the intelligence of himself and the readers. This is definitely an emotive read, and one you could finish in a day. A fantastic read for anyone who would love the comedy of understanding a cat's mind, or readers moved by life stories. I enjoyed that there were multiple short stories from our protagonist's life included in the chapters, however this meant I had to refocus my attention often.
