I love me some Freida McFadden, but sadly this one just did not hit for me. It was good, but I feel like the book just ended, it kind of just dropped off. I was shocked with the way it turned out and the plot kept me on my toes, but it could have gone on a little longer to round out the story. If you are a Freida fan, it is still worth the read.

This was a decent thriller. Easy to follow but still twisty enough to keep me guessing at certain points.

There was one error around page 275 where it was confirmed Hank was home, but a few pages later, he wasn't. Slightly irritating, but hey, everyone makes mistakes.

I don't understand some of the bad reviews saying this was a DNF.

Oof, this book was not for me.  It was repetitive, reductive, and the characters were one-dimensional.  Halfway through the book I was hoping it would turn out to be some kind of literary device, but nope, just more pages of the same.  And then the ending was so unrealistic, that if I had cared, it would have made me mad.  But I was just glad it was over.  Not worth it.  2 stars

It wasn’t my favorite Freida book, but it was fine. I will continue to read her books! I think this wasn’t as shocking/psychological for me and the writing wasn’t as strong - including weird moments where she repeated herself, especially about facts that were superfluous.

OOOOOOH BABY do I have some things to say about this book.

First of all, the audacity of the author to include an introduction saying “I never include violence in my books in case you let your kids read them…..” Not only is that simply a bold faced lie, but who the HELL would let a child read a thriller anyway!? Also, not for nothing, but not every single piece of literature has to be censored/tailored for children. Seriously, it’s okay for it to just be for adults. Like the ENTIRE GENRE SHOULD BE. I don’t know if she does same intro in all of her books, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen it.

Secondly, Polly made my blood boil with the white hot rage of exactly 11 million suns. I mean this in the most respectful way possible: if your infertility affects you to the point that you cannot act kind or rational around babies or other pregnant women, just stay in the goddamn house. Stop making your personal struggles everyone else’s problem. This absolute whack job really thought that she was going to steal a stranger’s baby and went to frighteningly dangerous lengths to try to do it. So no, I’m not going to have any sympathy for her just because she’s “struggling with infertility.” Get the hell out of here.

Third, Tegan let Polly off way too goddamn easy. I would have been singing like a canary the SECOND I laid eyes on a police officer. I don’t give a hoot that Polly saved her from being drugged by her brother. Are we supposed to give her a pass on the previous four days for that…..? Absolutely not.

AND FOURTH…..Hank, my brother in Christ, you’re one weak son of a bitch. If I were you would have called the police from my auto shop the minute my wife started going Baby Snatcher on me. Man the f*** up, dude. I know deep down you were a decent guy and thank god you mostly redeemed yourself in the epilogue because my brain would have actually exploded if you hadn’t.

I’m so mad at this whole book. Like, physically and mentally RAGING. The only reason I didn’t DNF is because I was holding on to a tiny shred of hope that Tegan would get a happy ending. Thank GOD she did because if she hadn’t I’d be suing Freida McFadden, her grandma, her spawn and the neighbor’s dog for good measure.

2 stars for this dumpster fire, physical personification of rage bait if I’ve ever seen it. If you’re not insane like me I could see you actually being able to get past some of this and enjoy the story.
