The Twisted Mark by Sophie Williamson

He put a spell on her…well…not a spell…a lien AND it changed her life! In this paranormal romance with a bit of urban fantasy, a feel of Romeo & Juliet, and a love-hate relationship; two people that are on oppositive sides try to find balance in their lives while determining what they might truly mean to one another.

What I liked:
* Sadie Sadler: witch with demon blood, from the ruling family of Mannith in northern UK, lawyer, bright, filled with magic she tries to control, moved to London for college and work, loves her family and believes in putting her family first – no matter what, is attracted to Gabriel, learns a lot in this book
* Gabriel Thornber: powerful magic practitioner, head of Thornber group, opposes Sadler group, believes he and Sadie are to be together, ruthless, hedonistic, willing to do what it takes to accomplish what he believes is right
* The backstory of Mannith and details of why Thornbers and Sadlers are at odds with one another, the way the dome came into being, and thinking about which side I would choose to be on
* That though a book of good and evil…everything isn’t always black and white
* The general attitude of magic practitioners regarding physical gratification and monogamy
* The familial, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual issues Sadie has to navigate and come to terms with during the course of this book
* The strong bond Sadie’s family has for each other
* The plot, pacing, setting, characters development, and world building
* Thinking about what will happen next

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how twisted one’s thinking would need to be to do some of the things that “good” people did in this book

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

This was an ok book.   It was a little slow on the beginning but did pick up toward the end.  Now let’s see where book two takes me.

When I first looked into The Twisted Mark, I was almost positive I would be sold on this book. I’m a big fantasy and witchy romance reader so upon reading the synopsis I was super excited to read this one. This book had all the perfect pieces to create a great story, a dark and broody love interest, a witty female lead, family ties, and a dark secret, but the execution was a little rushed. There were so many interactions between characters and plots that would’ve thrived if they had been given more time. There were so many characters I wanted to learn about and so much more to the history of this town that could’ve been explored. Some of the backstories were just briefly brushed over but in a real scenario they could’ve added to the story. Now all that being said I didn’t dislike this book. I definitely think it has potential. The plot line was gripping and the basis of each character is enough to draw a reader in. It definitely held my attention throughout and kept me invested, which I’m sure it will do to any reader who picks it up. I will definitely invest in the next book for sure and I hope to see more of Sadie and Gabriel’s backstories explored!

This won’t be for everyone, morally grey characters all over the place within this story. Magical writing style that works really well in the audio format.

There def are some things to keep in mind, MMC and FMC are with other people at times in this book.

The love story isn’t the main plot. While I would not say it ends on a cliff hanger it does have an unsatisfying ending that promises a sequel.

I love that this was witchy, had a magical system, and felt unique.

2.5/5
First of all, thanks to NetGalley and the people at Storm Publishing for allowing me to read this book in advance.
When I read the blurb I was 99% sold on this book. I thought I'd finally found a book that I'd like. But that was precisely what I didn't like about this book. The story has great potential, something different from what's being published recently (every book seems to be about fae while this focussed on witches) however the story didn't seem connected. There wasn't enough backstory for me to care about the characters and their relationships, and everything seemed thrown onto the paper just because. He was obsessed because his mom told him she'd be perfect for him. That's not enough of a backstory for me. I'm sure that if there's going to be a second book, this will be highlighted more. But it's simply not enough for me.
In short: this story has/had potential, and I hope it will be saved from the next book. The author had a great plotline in their head, I just wished the story was delivered better. It was a quick read and pleasant at times.
Once again, thank you for the opportunity given me for reviewing this book early.

I loved this book! I could not put it down as soon as I started reading. This is like Romeo and Juliet with magic and a hint of Grease. This book had so many twists and surprises. It kept me on my toes the entire time. I loved the mixture of the family drama and the trial. Sadie is strong and determined to help her family but also do what she wants. I loved the buildup between Gabriel and Sadie through the book. The ending was heartbreaking but necessary. I can’t wait to reread it and continue the series!

I enjoyed this book way more than I expected. It is a dark romantasy with enemies to lovers and forbidden love tropes and some truly morally gray characters. There is a lot happening throughout the book and I honestly could not put it down.

I expected the ending to be a bit more fleshed out and the alliance between the families a bit more hard fought for.

The Twisted Mark, the first installment of the Witch Trials series pulls you in, right from the beginning. It follows the story of Sadie Sadler, as she defends her brother in a trial in her hometown. Sadie had sworn off magic after saving her brother and owing a debt to a rival, Gabriel Thornber. Sadie is reluctantly dragged back into the world of magic and of her family and their influence. Is her brother innocent? Is her family to be trusted? Will Gabriel call in his debt?

I could not put this book down. I read it every chance I got - it pulled me in and constantly surprised me.

What I liked: I like that Sadie had pulled away from magic, in part to save her family, and now she's faced with getting pulled back in that world to save them again. The constant guesswork of who to trust was compelling. Should she trust her family blindly? Should she trust her magic? Her logic? I also enjoyed the fact that while you seem to have a good of idea of who is good and evil at the start...by the end, you realize they are all a little bit of both. And the spice.....perfect. The tension between characters was beautiful!

What I didn't like: I can't think of a thing I didn't like!

I will definitely check out the next book when it comes out.
