I was lured into this book based on 1) having read the first book in the series and 2) the updated cover artwork that doesn't have a real person on it. Something helpful to know is that you don't have to have read any of the other books in the series to enjoy this one - there are references to how the overall supernatural world functions (or the "Lore") and characters that have important functions, but this can be read on its own. It primarily takes place in New Orleans, in MFC Neomi's estate; a ballerina and burlesque performer, she was killed by her ex-fiance during a party she was hosting to show off her new estate. For 80 years, she's been haunting the property, never truly able to be seen or perceived, until vampire MMC Conrad is imprisoned there by his brothers. Once Conrad can see her, they develop a relationship, but because she's a ghost, it can never truly be - or maybe, because it's the Lore, it can. But sacrifices will need to be made.

I enjoyed this - I love New Orleans as a city and as a home for a supernatural story. The story has a good amount of spice and feels like a slow burn at the beginning. I was rooting for both of the characters, and liked the practical problems posed by Noemi's ghostliness - like extreme boredom and her daily fight to reach the newspapers left outside. This was a quick and easy read, and I ended up finishing it in a day. I also appreciated that I didn't have to read the previous three books in order or at all in order to enjoy this one - I'm sure I'll get to them, but there are like 20 books in this series.

I get most of my books from the library and my ultimate rating system is, "would I pay money for this?" And in this case, I would; it was incredibly convenient that this actually happened to be part of a $1.99 sale on Kobo!

Libby listen.
Excellent reread on audio! This narrator is so wonderful! Especially a single narrator that does many voices which is not always my thing but he is so talented.

This is my favorite in the series so far. It was such a unique and intriguing romance. I had no idea how Kresley Cole was going to make this romance work between a ghost and a vampire. The HEA was so rewarding, and Conrad was my favorite Wroth brother!

Néomi was murdered by her ex-fiance and has been trapped as a ghost in her home in New Orleans for the last 80 years. Conrad has gone mad from bloodlust and has been an assassin bent on revenge. His brother’s capture and bind him to her home to try and cure him from his madness/bloodlust. He is the only one who can see Néomi and they start to form a bond. Time is running out since Conrad was marked by a demon.

I loved how they built such an emotional and deep connection because they couldn’t even touch while they were trapped in the house together.

There was so much going on in this book and I loved how Mariketa was a big part of it. I loved seeing her and Bowen again. I am very excited to get to Cadeon’s book next.
