This book is all flowery dialogue and no plot. There’s absolutely no chemistry between Yuki and Grace, and it’s absolutely deranged that Grace would completely abandon her found family that she claims to love so much for this girl she’s met once. I really wish the side characters had actual personalities and weren’t just assigned labels and adjectives. I especially would’ve loved to get to know Agnes beyond just “queer white girl with BPD.” As a queer woman I really really wanted to like this. I’m sad that I didn’t.

I really wanted to like this book and it started off promising. But even  as a self proclaimed hopeless romantic the language in this book was way too flowery for me. There’s just nobody in the world who speaks this way which kind of took me out of trying to relate to this character.

Grace, our main character’s best friends were meant to be seen as the strong, empowering and messy individuals, but in some ways they just seemed toxic. One friend in particular seemed quite ab*sive  to the point where it was hard to see her good. Also the whole I love you so much it hurts thing is exactly what I don’t want younger readers to be reading. Codependency is not a good thing kids.

This was a really really lovely dive into character/personal growth and identity. The prose was simply gorgeous, and the characters are so wonderfully complex and real. I really enjoyed the balance of romance with personal growth and familial/friend relationships. No one's perfect, no one's a villain; we're all just trying our best and failing each other and ourselves sometimes, but we can always grow and do better. We can do best, whatever that looks like for us.

These lonely creatures absolutely stole my heart ❤❤

This book, I felt, was billed as a romantic comedy based on the premise on the back of the book. What is within these pages is more of an exploration into self acceptance and working through the parts of ourselves that we would rather leave in the dark, with a side plot of romance kinda squeezed off to the side. Once my head had the right expectations, my reading experience got better, but the beginning, admittedly was difficult for me to get through because of the palate difference.

This is one of the first queer adult (not YA) books i’ve read and i loved it so much. the representation is amazing and the plot is not focused on coming out or homophobia at all, and instead focuses on the characters, their relationships, and their growth.

This was one of those books I had high expectations for based on the hype, and overall I was disappointed. The messages and themes were relevant and interesting, but the way they were executed through the characters fell flat. The characters were believably flawed, but their behaviour and the way they talked wasn't believable. Some of the writing is beautiful, but the prose doesn't slot into a believable narrative.
