beautiful book. cannot get past the fact that his name is luke.
a witch’s guide to magical innkeeping follows a witch named sera who lost nearly all of her magic as a teenager following the resurrection of the great-aunt who is raising her in her mission, fifteen years later, to get it back with the help of her family—her great-aunt, a gardener, a man who lives almost exclusively in knight cosplay, her young cousin whom she cares for, an undead rooster skeleton, and a witch trapped in the form of a fox. when luke, a former acquaintance from sera’s time at school who is caring for his nine-year-old autistic sister, arrives at the inn in need of a place to stay for one night, he gets roped into her quest to regain her magic. as they embark on this mission to decipher an old and incomprehensible spell to do just that, luke finds himself growing unexpectedly and irrevocably fond of her and this life that she has built, and sera realizes that this life isn’t complete without luke and his sister present in it.
this was such a fun and cozy little romance book that contained nearly everything that i want from a romance book and might be my favorite installment of the entire genre so far. i am not the biggest fan of typical romance pacing in books because to me, it always feels just a bit too fast, but the pacing of this one was done so incredibly well in my opinion. i felt like the development of their relationship and the things that they felt for each other was very realistic and i enjoyed the general pacing of it. the characters themselves made a lot of sense together; i can believe with absolute certainty that luke and sera could realistically be a couple because their personalities and their chemistry actually worked together in a believable and smooth way. i absolutely loved all of the characters and how different they all were from one another, as well as how perfectly they fit together in their unconventional and heartwarming little family. i felt like this book had a lot of representation in it that was done, in my opinion, incredibly well.
i liked how intrinsic to the plot the social commentary was, as it truly was one of the most important aspects of the entire book. the plot itself was interesting and captivating with very few spots in which it slowed down to the point of boredom; i am very much a plot reader which is why i typically stray away from romance novels, because i feel like a majority of them do not have enough outside plot for me, but i thought that this book balanced romance and plot in a nearly perfect way to cater to my own personal reading tastes. foxes are also my favorite animal so it gets bonus points for having one as a central character for a majority of the book.
overall, i thought that this book was incredible. i went into it with the intention of breaking myself out of the shackles of this godforsaken reading slump, and it did a wonderful job of doing just that. it does lose points, however, because i truly just hate the name luke. it’s not real.

She's a witch who lost all of her powers when she saved her aunt. He's a historian who works for the guild that banished her. This is a true found family book where the extended cast of characters really makes the whole story. This is the kind of book I love getting lost in.
