He didn't get better. I didn't like Bill. And, he didn't really grow as a character. He just let things happen to him.
Also, it was great to get these glimpses of hidden depths to the series' underworld.
One little thing: the book (paper) I read didn't have this cover. I don't think I would have been so keen to buy it with the one I see here.
This series was recommended to me by Facebook's targeted ads and the first four were only $7 on Amazon, so having found myself on a week long trip without a book that was really grabbing my attention, I decided to give this series a shot. I was not disappointed. This series was recommended to me because I love the Dresden Files. (If you haven't read them, the main character is a wise-cracking wizard who gets himself into insane messes, but always manages to make his way out of them - somehow.)
I had my fill of vampires a few years ago, but I have to say I loved Gualtieri's take on them. Being a bit of a geek myself, I immediately liked Bill and all his quirky idiocy. This was just what I needed to pull me out of the reading slump I've been in lately. This is definitely not "make you think," material, but it was a fun read and I'm looking forward to the next disaster Bill gets himself into. I'm also kinda hoping that he at least *starts* to get the hang of being a vampire.
This. Is. Hilarious!
I mean, can you imagine a complete geek from The Big Bang Theory finding themselves in a vampire coven? And look, they may be geeks but they are not going to let some vampire kill them just because they look like a geek. Look, act, talk, and walk like a geek, but still!
The minute Bill starts narrating I was laughing. I can see why this was so hilarious for my husband and it was for me too. The predicaments Bill finds himself in, even for a vampire, is quite ridiculous. But how he deals with those situations is even better.
First, he is made into a vampire but since he has some kind of power that allows him to not obey other vampires. The compulsion they throw out just doesn't work on him. But he can do much more than just not listen! There are so many things he can do that HE doesn't even know about until Sally shows him the ropes.
And speaking of Sally she is just enough sarcastic humor to throw Bill off his game. Well, with what little game he has! Between Sally and Bill's two roommates, Bill is up to his canines in issues but that does not stop other vampires from making more issues for him.
Every single word of this had me laughing. In portions I laughed so hard I was nearly crying. Rick Gualtieri brings something to the vampire genre that has not been seen before and I love it! Much like my hubby, I plan to listen to every single word about Bill the Vampire. And when I'm done I'll probably start stalking Rick Gualtieri until he writes more! Fantastic narration by Christopher John Fetherolf! He does Bill justice! Love it.
In short: Hilarious! Fabulous vampire drama that is so unlike any other vamp show or book out there. A must read!
Plainly out, Bill the Vampire is fun. Outta a bit of Horror Comedy which is actually funny. Many times I cracked a smile while reading and a few times I snickered aloud. The story is straight forward and the author has fun playing with vampire tropes.
If Bill Book 1 is any induction of the style of the rest of the series, I can see myself pecking my way through it over time. If you like your horror a little goofy or silly at times, this is perfect. A great beach read and way accessible to those not normally into horror.
Looking at other people's reviews, it seems like there's a definite love/hate thing happening with this book.
I however just liked it's lot.
I didn't find Bill (the main character) misogynist like some people did. He just seemed honest. I do not have a low opinion on men, but we all have those instantaneous thoughts that pop in our heads, whether we we like to admit it or not.
And it was refreshing to see that in a book. Granted the language used may put off some people, but I didn't find it that harsh.
This book is about a "nerd" who get turned into a vampire. It's not supposed to be taken that seriously.
I will be getting the rest of the series.
