It's with a heavy heart that I write this review. I loved the first book. The review I left on the book is me just gushing about it. The twists and interesting characters. The second book was well...
I actually liked the beginning but the part that lost me was the fact that Constance can suddenly read the future. Not only did it ruin the mood of the book, but it was also just a lazy plot device to keep them from getting caught multiple times. She hears random footsteps. "Oh no! It's some random Ten Man's footstep she knows?!!" WHAT?
Anyways, it was okay. A little hard to get through.

The members of the Mysterious Society are reunited, but there is no time for celebration. Mr. Benedict and Number Two have gone missing! Personally, I preferred this book to the first one. It takes us on a thrilling adventure, traveling by boat and train, visiting Holland, libraries, and even an island. I would recommend it if you enjoyed the first book, or if you're looking for an exciting story about kids with special talents.

The beginning was very slow, the ending was so fast paced it made it hard to keep up, one of my least favs in the series. But once you re-read it, it’s 20x better.

My rating: 4.5 stars
This was a delightful middle grade read! While I did like "The Mysterious Benedict Society," I liked "The Mysterious Benedict Society and The Perilous Journey," much more.
I think that the main reason why I liked this second book better than the first is because the four main characters, Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance, go through a lot of character growth. While trying to rescue Mr. Benedict and Number Two, the characters come to terms with their weaknesses and strength their strong suits. Though the characters all children and do act like children, they do mature greatly in this book. Constance, especially, has changed quite a lot since the second book, of which I am grateful for (she got on my nerves in the first book).

Another thing I liked about this book were the way themes like revenge and mercy were handled. They are presented in a way that children can easily grasp, while still being complex enough to make older readers think. The ending was especially touching and though provoking!

I'm excited to see what happens to the Mysterious Benedict Society next in the third book :)

The idea of this book is the same as its predecessor... children who are very smart and talented in different ways work together to solve seemingly insurmountable problems. But whereas in the first book this idea was set against a plot of trying to take down an evil genius from inside his base of operations, here the plot is a bit... weaker. The same evil genius is back, and he's kidnapped the titular Benedict, but for the most part his existence and actions are just there to give the story a time limit of sorts.

Another fun adventure with the MBS. I still preferred the first book because I felt the mystery was more interesting, but as an adult reading a children's book that's bound to happen. I still highly recommend these for young people and grownups alike.
