These books are so well written and easy to read I find it hard to give them less that 5stars, even if they are lacking in romance (in my opinion at least). I just wish there were more scenes with Rose and Dimitri so I could feel their connection a little bit more, because I'm not in love with their relationship as I would like to be. :)
Totally knew that was going to happen to Dimitri. It was either that or he died.
OMG DIMKA!!!! :( i found this book funny, exiting and sad. it was really scary when rose started seeing ghosts (and totallt awesome of dimitri to help her sneak back inside) and it was cute after she got out of the sick place and her and dimka were walking back when he had that outburst and showed how worried he was. i was so awesome when rose killed the 3 "strigoi" and her and rose were just staring at eachother. and it was so sweet in the cabin how he was trying to calm rose down before they ... i bawled my eyes out at the end when dimitri got taken and she went to kill him. all 3 times i read this book i always have a massive ccan't stop crying attack.
EXCUSE ME? WHAT WAS THIS BOOK ALL ABOUT? ONE MINUTE THEY'RE PERFECTLY HAPPY, THEN THEY GO OFF KILLING LOTS OF STRIGOI AND THEY'RE ALL STRONG AND THEN THAT FREAKING CLIFFHANGER. NOT COOL GUYS.
I screamed when I turned the last page. This is so NOT cool. My Dimitri.. I've already read spoilers so I know how it will end but GUYS COME ON WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME.
I have now officially fallen in love with this series. AND I AM FREAKING OUT. WHERE IS THE FOURTH BOOK? - runs to sister's room -

That ending made me angry. Angry angry angry.
But the book was really beautiful. And probably one of the best depictions of "the act" since "Forever" by Judy Blume. Way better than that "other" well-known vamp series.
All-in-all, VA is shaping up to be amazing. I'm glad it's a duo of trilogies and that I have three more books left, plus the spin-off Bloodlines.
Richelle writes a lot of laugh-out-loud funny lines. Had it not been for Rose's humor in this book, a good portion of it would have been a bit too whiny. Fortunately, Rose (and also Christian and Adrian) have a knack for the sarcastic that really makes you think of the characters as real and not fantasy. Anytime where a character reminds you of a real life person or is full of real world humor and wit, it's a good thing.
Ready to start the fourth ASAP.

Reread, December 2022: These books are not well written, my apologies to Richelle Mead. (I read the kindle editions originally and now I’m reading paper copies, and I’m like “did they do stealth editing to make the ebook better, or was the writing always this stilted and I just missed it?”) But I am still just thinking of the plot points in relation to the show and unfortunately having an emotion. Kieron Moore Strigitri, let’s go/I WILL cry. And, like, under no circumstances do you “gotta hand it” to Julie Plec, but it is nice how the show has already incorporated stuff from later books, specifically the conversation about how fucked up “they come first” is.
Original review, September 2017: I wasn't at all spoiled for the end of this book and now I'm LOSING IT
