“The deep sea is a haunted house: a place in which things that ought not to exist move about in the darkness.“

This is truly a beautifully poetic yet deeply unsettling book. As someone with thalassophobia, Leah’s chapters absolutely made my skin crawl.

This story is an unnerving and claustrophobic story of sapphic love, changing, and letting go. A beautiful mix of poetic prose and body horror intermingled with the suffocating flashbacks of Leah’s time trapped under the sea.

I loved this book. It was an uncomfortable, emotional and anxiety inducing rollercoaster squeezed into 232 pages. And while it set off those deep fears within me, it also enraptured me from start to end.

This was meant to be my Halloween read but I finished it the morning of the 30th. I'm very scared of the deep ocean so it felt like a perfect fit. I wouldn't call this chilling or scary - 'Our Wives Under the Sea' is less deep ocean horror story and is more introspective, surreal and isolating with eerie body horror. I had an idea of what I was going into but if you don't know and like slower, intimate stories over something action packed then just pick this up and go in blind. I loved the way this was written, the exploration of Miri and her mental state and the overall ambiguity.

It follows Miri and Leah in the wake of Leah's return from a deep sea mission, different. What was meant to be 3 weeks in a submarine was instead months of no contact.

Expect beautiful writing, surrealism and a lot of science-y facts.

Slow-paced and a bit repetitive. Frustration with how characters dealt with situations. Ending left more questions unanswered than answered. Although a great story to symbolize grief and losing a loved one.

The themes of loss, fear, conspiracy, change, grief, evolution, isolation and the sense of feeling a drift are woven into this book really well. The story on itself it seems very basic and straight forward. Until we are taken further and further in; Our Wives in the Sea is a haunting tale. It’s intriguing and grossly disturbing in its detail. But I am drawn forward to learn more. Since it came up, a phrase I have not been able to let go of is Sunken Thoughts. It’s as if Leah and her team were being set up to be studied and so were Mari and the other loved ones left on land. Oh another line that stays with me: take her back and return her again only better.

It’s bittersweet; a book that will stay with you.

Horrible. Haunting. Gorgeous.
This novel is a powerful exploration of losing yourself and losing those who matter most. Of illness. Of complicated love. With exquisite prose, and aching dual narration, Armfield seems to ponder: If you stare into the abyss, and it stares back into you, is there anywhere to go but down?
