There's something really cathartic about Lindy West's battles. She's SO RIGHT, and she stands up for things (that I agree with wholeheartedly) much more thoroughly and hilariously than the average person could.

Some chapters will be familiar, if you're a regular This American Life listener.

I wasn't familiar with Lindy West before this but picked up her book because of the TV series of the same name (based on this memoir). Her writing is sharp and frank and endlessly funny. Essential reading for any feminist, activist, or comedy fan.

“Our world isn’t fixed, the way those currently in charge would have you believe. It’s malleable.” I love West’s perspective on life and women’s issues and dealing with hateful people. So glad I read this!

I love comedy, feminism, pop culture, dysfunctional confessions and memoirs but I did not care for this book at all. Ms. West is not shrill, imho. If she was, this may have been more interesting.

Lindy West was not a comic that I was familiar with before this read. I really learned a lot about the early building of women in comedy. Honestly women have to deal with so much shit that doesn’t even register to others and then are convinced that women are over dramatic. People consistently make it known through actions and words that they don’t consider women to be human beings and that’s an excuse to do and say whatever they want for the sake of a “joke”. Good for Lindy to stand up to the dickheads and call them out on their bullshit.

women are human beings and we deserve some mf respect!

YES! YESYESYESYESYES!!!!!!!!!!
This book has everything! Humor, honesty, sass, intelligence and holds nothing back.
Lindy West is my hero.
Every woman needs this book. Heck, men should read this book!
After finishing this book, my soul feels so full! I didn't know all the things that I needed to hear that I got to hear from this book.

I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author. This book flew by. It is the second book I read that has the topics about body size. It poked my mind and made me think about things that I had not thought about before.

The author grew up in a well- off mid class family. She is white and a cisgender. So in many ways she is privileged. However, she never tried to hide that from the book and was very genuine about her own struggles being a plus size person. I love her honesty and sharp mind.

I gave it 3.5 stars and rounded up to 4
