I have mixed feelings about this book... it is a great coming-of-age story and the characters are super lovable, but I didn't love the format it was written in and I don't think it quite lived up to the hype. my favorite part of it was how much they talked about music in the book so that I could listen while I read and feel more connected to the characters

This book is incredible. I loved it dearly as a teenager and reread it so many times. I just re-read it as an adult and felt so held and seen by this book. Charlie is someone who witnesses a lot of pain in his life and sees the pain of the people he loves. And he's trying to make sense of it all and understand how to deal. It's a story that really hits home for me and is so beautifully told.

All of the intense and potentially triggering topics in this book are handled really well. Nothing is in there for shock value. As someone who went through a lot of what happened in this book, I felt everything was handled with care.

This book was both shocking and engrossing, yet I think that Stephen Chbosky's writing style fell a little flat at times for me. While it is like you are the friend that "Charlie" is writing to, and you do empathize with Charlie strongly, there are moments when I found it hard to believe in Charlie's age level as certain times it read as though it was written by someone much much younger than 15, even with the difficult emotional experiences that Charlie is going through. If you are reading this book, you most likely know the trigger warnings but do watch out for the content because this book does not shy away from somewhat graphic/shocking events that may be triggering for certain individuals.
